The Ember War, book 1: The Earth is doomed. Humanity has a chance.

In the near future, an alien probe arrives on Earth with a pivotal mission: to determine if humanity has what it takes to survive the impending invasion by a merciless armada. The probe discovers Marc Ibarra, a young inventor who holds the key to a daring gambit that could save a fraction of Earth's population. Humanity's only chance lies with Ibarra's ability to keep a terrible secret and engineer the planet down the narrow path to survival. Earth will need a fleet. One with a hidden purpose. One strong enough to fight a battle against annihilation.

The Ember War is the first installment in an epic military sci-fi series. If you enjoyed A Hymn Before Battle by John Ringo and The Last Starship by Vaughn Heppner, then you'll love this explosive adventure with constant thrills and high stakes from beginning to end.

The Ruins of Anthalas, book 2: An ancient holocaust holds the key to humanity's survival.

Only a sliver of mankind survived the Xaros invasion. With Earth's defenses in ashes, nothing can stop the aliens' inevitable return. Hope arrives through a cryptic message from a long-lost alien race, promising the means to rebuild the shattered space fleet. Captain Valdar takes one of the last strike carriers, the Breitenfeld, and his shell-shocked crew on a desperate mission to the dead world. Unfortunately humans aren't the only power that received the ancient message....

The Ruins of Anthalas is the second book in The Ember War Saga, a military sci-fi space opera. If you like David Weber and John Ringo with a touch of Isaac Asimov, then you'll love this fast-paced and captivating adventure where humanity survives at the edge of a knife.

Mr. Fox wrote the wrong book
By D. Trimmer
The book starts with a lot of promise. An alien AI decides to help humanity survive an approaching genocidal alien fleet. The probe makes contact with a very bright young man and together they need to elevate the humans technology to a high enough level than there is a chance of survival. The scene is now set for a very interesting story of how the AI/young genius are able to guide humanity through a rapid evolution of technology, politics, culture, etc.

Unfortunately, Mr. Fox doesn't devote a single word to this story line. Instead, immediately after the AI and the young genius get together, the story jumps ahead 60 years to just hours before the alien invasion arrives. The book (and the 2nd book in the series) is just one battle after another. Our heroes fight drones and reptilian aliens (book 2).

The books are fast paced and move quickly from one battle to the next. The description of the battles is conpetently done. Unfortunately, there is nothing new here. Everything has been done over and over ad nauseam.

If you are new to the genre, you will probably enjoy the book. However, if you read a lot of military SF, there is nothing new here.

So-so
By Vash The Stampede
Story was decent, but the rapidly shifting POV and the sheer number of characters was confusing. The level of detail for some situations was overdone - e.g. you don't need a paragraph to describe the size of a dining room, and why bother at all when it contributes nothing to the story? Another criticism I have is to ease up on the hyperbole - this author used it to the point of cliche.

A College Student Wants to Sleep - If He Does - Humanity Dies!
By Guardsix
This book starts out a little slow. Some college kid gets woken up by his cell phone and keeps turning it off so he can get back to sleep. He knows he’s supposed to get up and go to classes, but after the night he had, no way. Still, his cell phone keeps ringing. He actually powers it completely down and the thing comes back on and is still yelling at him! By now, I would be really worried about whether I was still asleep or not. He finally answers his phone and then he’s off to rendezvous with something in the desert.

Turns out, his rendezvous was a serious necessity if he was to save all of humanity! Wow! That’s kind of an important meeting, don’t you think. Anyway, you start off with this kid living approximately around our time and then the next chapter has you flying through space as a Atlantic Union Marine. They're combat dropping on to an asteroid that is supposed to be a mining operation. For some reason, the mining operation has not be answering radio calls so the Marines are going to find out why. From here on in the action is pretty fast and continuous. I just love this kind of science fiction story. There’s a lot of shooting and being shot, deranged robot mining machines and then alien droids coming from every where.

The whole premise of the story is that the kid, remember him, has been planning for the last 60 years to save humanity from an alien attack. At the time he had his meeting in the desert, Earth and all of humanity was just about as doomed as you can be. Yet, he had just wrote a scientific paper which alerted the envoy from deep space that there might be something worth saving in the Solar System. The only problem is that Earth has only 60 years to get ready.

Again, I really like the book because of all the fast action and it was a military science fiction book. What I found lacking was any in-depth background on the main characters. Even the kid, a.k.a., Marc Ibarra, wasn’t really covered in detail as to his background or anything. The same can be said for his Granddaughter, Stacy. How did she come to being and what apparently caused her to end up being the only Grandchild of Marc Ibarra. The story alludes to his Granddaughter as being very special but nothing happens that really shows her to be special, so far. Maybe that’s coming the in next books.

The nice thing about reading this book is that the next two books in the series are already published. “The Ruins of Anthalas” and “Blood of Heroes” are on Amazon and in my library. I have some more reading to do.

Fascinating read!
By Philip J. Nork
The Tree House is an interesting read.

What would you do if you found out you were part of some medical experiment when you were born and the chip they implanted in you to help keep you safe actually would kill you years later?

Hailey, a 21-year-old woman, and others were part of this and you won't believe what they do. This is more than an adventure; it is a tale of trust, family, broken dreams and love. I found myself immersed immediately and unable to do anything else until I finished it.

I recommend this book to everyone who feels different, whose life isn't going as planned and to those who are eternal optimists. Everyone will take something from this read.

Kudos to the author and I hope she writes some more. I am hooked on her!

Where have you been all my life?
By Daniela @ YA Book Season
There are some truly unique gems in the self-publishing industry, and The Tree House is definitely one of them. I had a hard time putting this one down, and right now, I'm having a hard time putting this review together to fully express my feelings for this book. I am head over heels in love with it. It was.... wow. I fully expected something predictable, something I always come across, something I would easily get bored with, but there was none of that. This book hit home-run about tens time.
At first, the start of the book was 'eh, it's okay'. Hailey's home is broken into and her parents yell at her to run, so she does. The story instantly picks up speed. Hailey is chased by two men in suits, who are pointing guns at her head. She ends up being saved by this No-Name stranger with lovely eyes. And at that exact point where Hailey meets No-Name, I thought the book would fall into the usual romantic cliche. She met her handsome Prince Charming and they rode off into the sunset.
I was wrong. TOTALLY wrong. So take it from me: Do NOT judge this book by the first ten pages. It gets good. Really good.

I was expecting a Disney 'they lived happily ever after' with some random singing and nice choreography and a whole lot of kissing. Well, I got the kissing part, but this pure blood, sweat, and tears all over the place. Definitely not Disney's style. This had the gripping suspense of the best action movies I've seen (and that's saying something). The book takes over a time span of about two weeks and a lot of things happen during these two weeks. It moves lightning quick, but Shay Lynam definitely knows how to pace herself.

Hailey is 100% human and so is everyone else (just thought I'd point that out), they were just not supposed live through their birth. So Eli Scott created a special chip to keep these types of children alive. It was brilliant, the miracle of all miracles and it was going to sell for millions, until the chip started to malfunction and all these children (now adults) began to die horrible deaths. He didn't want people suing him so what did he do? He contracted a couple of killers and sent them out to get rid of the evidence. Luckily for Hailey, Jack (who I will now call 'The Maelstrom of Emotions') finds her and... well, Hailey sort of forces him to help her. She's a tough girl like that.

Hailey is a fierce and utterly unpredictable girl. She cries a lot, but under the circumstance, who wouldn't? So many terrible things happen to her. Gosh, I don't even know how she kept going. Shay Lynam had no mercy on her, she was constantly facing some sort of obstacle whether it was a gunman or Jack or her own brother. I do admire her, not only because of her emotional strength, but because she remained levelheaded even when she had all the reasons not to.
Jack (The Maelstrom of Emotions) was... a maelstrom of emotions. He could make me giddy, depressed, and ready to shoot his head off all in one. He had this bipolar thing going on (or maybe it's an all guy thing) where he acted like he hated Hailey when he was actually crushing on her. To put it short, he could get under anyone's skin. He wasn't a 'swoon-worthy' guy, he was just inevitable and captivating. The sort of guy you know is bad but you just can't look away from.
Their relationship was complicated. It was perfect really. They were both angry and hurt and they needed someone to look after them even if they didn't know it.

Story-wise, people die in this book. I know that sounds like a stupid observation, but I really got to know the characters and I actually felt connected to them. I cared about them.

Overall, I LOVED The Tree House. There were a lot of grammatical and spelling errors, but I soon found myself flying past those. The story was fast and furious and I was in for a lot of surprises. Now, the ending was exactly a cliffhanger, but I'm pretty sure there will be a book two.
I. CANNOT. Wait!
Do I recommend it? Oh. Yeah.

Simply GREAT
By Brian Pedersen
Seldom do I find a piece of writing that is both interesting and entertaining. This is just such a book. It had great character development and a strong and fast moving story line. For a first time book this young lady has done herself well. I encourage her to continue with her writing. It can only get better as she continues to develop her skills and desire to write. I was drawn into her story and found it most difficult to put the book down. Actually, I kept it by my side and when I had five or more minutes to continue reading I would return to the story. I especially like the ending. It was imaginative and rather surprising to say the least. I more than recommend this book to anyone who loves exciting and fast moving stories. A story with a serious feel to it as the girl in the story discovered and then dealt with her problem. I always thought of a tree house as a sanctuary, a place where one could find solitude and peace when life was dealing someone some serious problems. This was far beyond that. GOOD JOB! B. D. Pedersen

How to Build a Habitable Planet: The Story of Earth from the Big Bang to Humankind, by Charles H. Langmuir, Wally Broecker

Since its first publication more than twenty-five years ago, How to Build a Habitable Planet has established a legendary reputation as an accessible yet scientifically impeccable introduction to the origin and evolution of Earth, from the Big Bang through the rise of human civilization. This classic account of how our habitable planet was assembled from the stuff of stars introduced readers to planetary, Earth, and climate science by way of a fascinating narrative. Now this great book has been made even better. Harvard geochemist Charles Langmuir has worked closely with the original author, Wally Broecker, one of the world's leading Earth scientists, to revise and expand the book for a new generation of readers for whom active planetary stewardship is becoming imperative.

Interweaving physics, astronomy, chemistry, geology, and biology, this sweeping account tells Earth’s complete story, from the synthesis of chemical elements in stars, to the formation of the Solar System, to the evolution of a habitable climate on Earth, to the origin of life and humankind. The book also addresses the search for other habitable worlds in the Milky Way and contemplates whether Earth will remain habitable as our influence on global climate grows. It concludes by considering the ways in which humankind can sustain Earth’s habitability and perhaps even participate in further planetary evolution.

Like no other book, How to Build a Habitable Planet provides an understanding of Earth in its broadest context, as well as a greater appreciation of its possibly rare ability to sustain life over geologic time.

Review
Honorable Mention for the 2012 Award for Best Professional/Scholarly Book in Earth Sciences, Association of American Publishers

"[T]his classic history of our common home with the latest discoveries in planetary science . . . is a cutting-edge exploration of the Earth's evolution from the Big Bang to the advent of human civilization."--Barnes & Noble Review

"To be worth being this unwieldy, a book ought to do something pretty remarkable. And that's just what How to Build . . . does, as you can tell from its subtitle, The Story of Earth from the Big Bang to Humankind. Now that's what you call a large canvas."--Brian Clegg, Popular Science

"Like any good story, the tale that Langmuir and Broecker tell is a complex, weaving narrative that would be ideally placed on your bookcase between James Kasting's How to Find a Habitable Planet and Peter Ward and Donald Brownlee's Rare Earth. . . . As non-astronomers they cover the initial cosmological and astronomical sections adequately, but as the book develops towards explaining the processes that make Earth habitable, the authors' expertise really comes to the fore. . . . How to Build a Habitable Planet is Earth's story, but Langmuir and Broecker conclude with a nod to exoplanets and the search for alien life. Could it one day also become another planet's story?"--Astronomy Now

"The authors . . . have taken on a mighty task. You cannot underestimate the accuracy of their scholarship, or its thoroughness."--Heather Couper, BBC Sky at Night

"This is a completely different book, wholly updated but also more detailed and more comprehensive. Yet, it keeps the bright flavour of the old version, and remains accessible without compromising on accuracy. . . . How to Build a Habitable Planet is an accurate and enjoyable read."--Euan G. Nisbet, Nature Geoscience

"Enormous advances have been made in the Earth sciences in the years since the original volume appeared. In addition, climate change has become a much more urgent topic. The revised version aims to bring the science up to date and to give a current environmental perspective. In this undertaking, Broecker has been joined by Langmuir, who now becomes first author. Their approach of providing each chapter with a clear introduction and summary will help greatly in accommodating the lay reader. . . . We can be grateful to the authors that they had the initiative and energy to undertake a scientific synthesis of such broad scope. . . . All who are concerned with the global environment and who wish to be scientifically well-informed in relation to it will find the book a worthwhile and inspirational challenge."--Ray Bates, Irish Times

"[Langmuir and Broecker] strike a nice balance with roughly an equal number of chapters devoted to life, earth, and extraterrestrial processes. . . . What makes it work is the authors' admirable job of focusing tightly on how the many processes they outline feed into life's makeup or systems needed to support it."--Choice

"Although this 718 page book is over twice as long compared to the first edition, it is still a comfortable read both for earth scientists as well as nonspecialists. The diverse topics dealt with have been skillfully stitched together and each chapter provides lucid descriptions, logical discussions and a nice summary. This book could be an useful text for undergraduate students in earth sciences and with necessary supplements, could also be used for advanced courses in earth sciences."--Ramananda Chakrabarti, Current Science

"I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a well-informed exploration of the theories behind building a habitable planet. Although complex in some places, it is still accessible to many and is overall a very useful addition to any astrobiologist's library."--Samantha Rolfe, Astrobiology Society of GB

"This classic account of how our habitable planet was assembled from the stuff of stars introduced readers to planetary, Earth, and climate science by way of a fascinating narrative. Now it has been made even better."--Lunar and Planetary Information Bulletin

"Generally speaking, the book by Langmuir & Broecker is very reader friendly. . . . It can become an essential reading for both beginners and professionals in geology, palaeontology, and other natural sciences. Geoscience educators will also praise it. . . . This book is a very good addition to the conventional textbooks on general geology, and it can be recommended for students as advanced reading."--Dmitry A. Ruban, Palaontologie Allgemein

From the Back Cover

"In this comprehensive and engaging tour of environmental science, world-leading authorities Charles Langmuir and Wally Broecker provide the residents of the only habitable planet we know with the essential knowledge of how we got here and where we might be going."--Richard Alley, Pennsylvania State University

"As NASA continues to assess the habitability of our planetary neighbor, Mars, this insightful and approachable book is a timely reminder of how important it is to understand the habitability of our own Earth. Comprehensive and up-to-date, it exposes how ideas, imperfect understanding, and controversies drive scientific knowledge forward."--Roger Everett Summons, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

"This is a magnificent book, a successful and very worthwhile revision of its legendary and coveted first edition. The new edition offers more than a minor dusting off of the material. There are some completely new chapters and the authors have also done a good job of introducing newer discoveries. This book is more timely than ever, and I greet this revision with uncontained enthusiasm."--Raymond T. Pierrehumbert, University of Chicago

"This book is exceptionally well written and easy to read. The authors have taken a huge and complex topic and simplified it, removed the jargon, used analogies common to everyday experience, and as a result made a book that should be accessible and enjoyable to readers with little background in science."--Becky Alexander, University of Washington

Outstanding: a must-read
By Yvonne Stapp
This is an indispensable resource and the material is very accessible. The book starts with the Big Bang and describes the evolution of the universe: stars, galaxies, solar systems and their contents, and on to Earth. This background prepares us for the relationship between the co-evolution of our planet and the life it supports. This comprehensive, multi-dimensional approach makes us realize (1) that we are part of a huge interconnected bio-geo-chemical and physical network; and (2) that humans have a special responsibility to protect that natural network.

Learn how we got here
By Roger Doger
It has over 200 pages and covers many subjects from the Big Bang to how humankind evolved. It goes into great detail about such things as how carbon dioxide stabilized the earth's temperature, despite changes in solar luminosity, moving continents, periods of ice ages, reptile changes, vast changes in life, and the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere. All these things are examined in great detail including about how life produced oxygen, in the ocean, which produced life on land. In all it really pointed out how every thing is connected.

For Rottie and Rottie-mix Owners, a *Must Have* Book!
By Joan H. Walker
Barb McNinch is not only an excellent professional trainer, she is also an outstanding Rottie person. In this book, McNinch goes far beyond a basic, generic training book and presents the reader with a training program tailormade to the Rottweiler. Readers of this book will come away with a much deeper understanding and appreciation for their Rottweilers, as well as the ability to train their puppies and dogs to truly be good canine citizens. I would highly recommend this book to Rottie owners, as well as owners of Rottie mixes. If the Rottie-mix has taken on any characteristics of the Rottweiler, this book will be of great help.
