About the Author
Isaac Elchanan Mozeson (b. 1951 in British Columbia) grew up in Plymouth and Brookline, Mass. He taught English at universities like Yeshiva College (where he got his B.A.) and New York University, where he completed doctoral studies. Mozeson published a monograph and anthology of poetry, reviewed books for Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly, and others, and co-authored books on Jewish history, homelessness, Israel and urban slang. Since various editions of The Word (1989), Mozeson founded Edenics, and heads a group of global researchers. Some of the volunteers, and samples of the data are at www.edenics.org. Amazing book for word lovers

Issac Mozeson's lovely Origin of Speeches Ed.2 Is a must read for language enthusiasts who Wonder at the amazing world of human speech. Mozeson is of the burgeoning Monogenesis of Language school of linguists
Who see what clearly seems to be Proto Semitic roots in almost every word in every world language. Mozeson's Proto Hebrew DERECH chart clearly shows the DeReCH, Hebrew for road, way, journey (Dental- Liquid- Guttural combinations ) in nearly 60 languages. In plain English we have DiReCtion, TRucK and
TReK. Many others. In Russian we have DaRoGa. Way, Road. Japanese has DoRo, road. Hindi has TaRah. Etc Etc.

Is this by accident? Coincidence? Mozeson claims to have for all to see more than 50,000
such world words linked to the Proto Semitic Hebrew roots in his magnificent E -Word digital dictionary as originally noted in his groundbreaking The Word -The Dictionary that Reveals the Hebrew Source of English.

Mozeson shows how weak many IE roots are compared to the Hebrew. AGRICULTURE comes to mind. Mozeson writes " A field of AGRICULTURAL words has been harvested, processed and distilled to the Indo-European "root" agro (field). Agros (field) is Greek; aecer (field or ACRE) is Old English. Interesting theory

While too jargon-ridden to be considered light reading, it nevertheless presents an interesting theory, one which was considered the standard for many years, before our current bunch of "there's-never-been-anyone-as-smart-as-we-are" academics started attacking it. The author discusses some of the tens of thousands of examples he has found, in multiple languages, and how modern liguists are beginning to believe that, at one time, there was a single, common language on earth - as long as it wasn't similar to Hebrew! He also gives examples of Hebrew etymologies being stripped from dictionaries; for example, the word "amen" still shows a Hebrew past, but the similar word "amenable," with a similar meaning (though a different part of speech) does not.

An Emotional Read

Wow just Wow....it took me a couple of days to write this review after reading ‘Ugly’ by Margaret McHayzer as the book gave me a lot to think about, I had so many mixed feelings I had to let everything sink in. No, it is not because I didn't like it, but because it was very emotional.

This book gives us a look into the life of someone living their whole life feeling unworthy, unlovable, ugly and that pain is just something as normal as breathing. I had to keep taking breaks because it would make me super angry and emotional to read.

Some parts I felt so bad for Lily about having such a bad start in life and I wanted to run to her and save her. But other parts I wanted to find her shake and slap her. I know it's a real life for many people and they struggle with these problems every day. But wow it is so hard to read, watch or even know of people going through this.

So over all this was a deep, emotional read that yes I would recommend just be warned it's very hard to read in some points. I don't want to give any spoilers so I encourage this read and if you know anyone going through this maybe just reading this might give you some courage to make a change. It is a 4 star read for me.

Wow, Margaret never disappoints me with her stories. She is so versatile in all that she does and she truly is an amazing writer.
This story was not an easy read. The subject matter is not something people talk about on a daily basis. But I could not put it down.
Domestic violence is not okay.
This story will make you cry.
This story will make you think.
It will bring your emotions to the surface.
It will break your heart.
It may be a trigger to some people.
So completely thought provoking and so sad. So excellently written from the perspective of a girl being abused her whole life in one way or another.
Ms McHeyzer has planned and written this story so well that she portrayed the topic of domestic violence chillingly.
This is definitely not your classic love story. It is not your classic romance.
If you can handle the subject matter, then you definitely need to read Lilly’s story.
Lilly will inspire you to never give up.

Wow! Just wow... I don't have many words to be able to describe how I feel about this book but I will say that my heart broke, I cried, And I smiled. It was an overall emotional roller coaster and It is definitely an eye opener. I will definitely be recommending this book to everyone I know. The author wrote this amazing story and it truly is inspiring.

Become the belly dance teacher you long to be...

Katayoun is an awesome instructor and performer and I am happy she decided to share her teaching methods. I wish this book had been available when I started teaching a couple years ago. The workshops I took to help me become a belly dance teacher didn't focus on the skills I needed to help me create lesson plans, correct students, and help them build skills to progress in multilevel classes. I was alone in the woods until I found this wonderful well organized book. Katayoun outlines a complete curriculum to address skills, music and culture, and performance artistry. The book covers: Movement Vocabulary, Thematic Units & Lesson Plans, Build-Up Method of Creating Combinations, Layering Methods of Teaching, Class Structure, Sequence & Pace, Rubrics of Skills & Standards, and Teaching Tips. Her writing style is clear and makes you feel as if she is there supporting you. It is a gem that belongs in every belly dance teacher's library.

Amazing book for teachers

I love this book. It had been a wonderful guide to freshen up my classes and give more structure. I highly recommend it to seasoned teachers to help with classes and a definite must for new teachers. I can't say enough about it and it's author. Her classes and workshops are amazing and her teaching shines through this book.

Review on book about Pope Pius XII

This review is a bit “conditional” because it depends a lot on where a reader is coming from. I am a Roman Catholic who knows very well the culture, beliefs and ethic of what life was like in the Roman Catholic Church back in the time of Pope Pius XII. As a result of this, I can read a book by Sister Lehnert and understand clearly and fully the culture and ethic she is talking about. For somebody like me, who understands this culture, the book is very informative, inspiring and enlightening.
If a person is NOT aware of all of this, I guarantee that the book will appear very strange and not at all realistic. Some readers may be totally lost and miss many of the meanings of what is discussed.
It is a lot like this: Let’s say you, as an individual, know a lot about cars. You may be able to read and write about all sorts of technical details and many complex workings and know immediately what it all means. It MAY and IS real and sensible but to somebody who does not know the workings and nature of cars and engines, they will be lost. The same is true with this book.
In a way, the book is “unworldly” in the sense that much of what Sister talks about is of a deep spiritual meaning that is very foreign to modern day sensibilities. It “may” be very real but it is something so deep that most modern readers may get confused with it.
For example, Sister reveals in the book that Pope Pius XII worked to massive excess. He slept only 4 hours a day, worked endlessly day and night with barely a break, ate almost nothing and rarely, if ever, did anything to “relax”. Modern understanding of this would make out that Pope Pius was either a workaholic to the max and was “sick”. But, understanding the spiritual nature of how Pope Pius viewed this, it was a very natural and sensible thing: For the Kingdom of God, it was highly desirable and for HIM necessary to concentrate his entire being on the work of God. He did this to the extreme peril of his health. When one understands the nature of the spirituality at work, it makes sense in a deep, theological sense. To one who is not aware of this understanding, it is sheer nuts.
So, to truly understand the real meaning of the life at hand there one must be able to understand the “world” in which it was a part. THAT was the world of Pope Pius and Sister and others and it was very real, sensible and noble. To get anything from the book one needs to accept the premise it revolved around. Doing this, one can learn a lot about what Pope Pius XII was like. If somebody makes the mistake of viewing his life and activities according to modern interpretation they will be sadly misunderstanding the best points of his life.
I found the book a “good read” in that it flows well, covers a lot and was translated from the original German decently.
Sister covers a lot of important details (including the reasons why Pope Pius acted as he did during the war) and gives a good explanation of what happened and how the pope responded and why.
One thing in the book DID get to be a bit irritating to me. Sister, in her enthusiastic desire to show that Pope Pius XII was deeply loved went to too many extremes in detailing many of the endless gatherings that Pope Pius presided over. While it is only natural that at such gatherings there will be enthusiast response to seeing or hearing a pope in person, her coverage of all this was excessive and a bit tiring to read and re-read over and over again. She made her point that he was enthusiastically received but she didn’t have to document endless examples like she did.
Overall, the book was interesting and I enjoyed it. You do learn a lot about what the popes’ life was like. The ONLY really irritating thing to me was that she mentioned absolutely nothing about the years from the end of World War II to his death in 1958. These were important years with loads of important details and events that people would want to know about but were not covered at all. This was irritating to me and I don’t know why she did that. It is a major failing of the book.

The book is an enthusiastic celebration and total admiration of Pope Pius XII from a trusted "insider". She reveals no faults or short comings which is a bit of a disappointment because to really understand even a great person, you need to see some of their faults. She details nothing like this and I think that leaves a bit of a too biased view. I'm not looking for dirt against Pope Pius but I would like to know some of his shortcomings that must have existed in his being. It would help to understand the total person but she revealed nothing. In spite of this, the book was very interesting.

Very Faithful Servant

This is a personal account of the very devoted and yes faithful personal assistant confidant of Pius XII. Sister Pascalina was there and is a good witness to history. No doubt he was her hero and never waivered in her devotion.

Leaves A Lot Unsaid ....

I looked at the sample which claimed this book did not require any knowledge of C# or VB. I was looking for a resource to show me how to connect, and use, SQL databases with C# and Visual Studio 2010. I have plenty of experience in xBase languages, but need to make this transition. Since the book was just published, I figured this was a good choice.

Sadly, it seems like the author sat at the computer and dictated a text of what he was doing, and then said "copy this". Well, that includes his own directories, called resources that are likely not on your computer, and then a lot of code without any explanation of its purpose, or definition of its use. Example: He says "If you don't have the Northwind database you can download it from the Microsoft web site." Actually, its not that easy ! Also, he doesn't state that you want an Access install of this database. He then goes on to list a lot of code to type in, with no explanation of what you are actually doing.

This may be quite good for someone who is totally articulate in .NET and all of the Windows programming options, but for someone who is not, its just a smoke filled room that is hard to navigate and understand.

I'll come back to it after I work through other materials and hopefully it will make better sense then. For now, its just going to sit on my virtual bookshelf.

Perfect Timing

I was having trouble getting database access working in C# and this book was exactly what I needed. I downloaded it to my iPad and today has turned out to be a very productive day. The examples are clear and easy to follow so I was able to overcome my hurdles and make up some lost time on my project. I didn't have to skim through lots of blah, blah, blah on the history of VBA or any other dribble. It was too the point and exactly what I need to get the job done. Thank you Michael Schmalz and O'Reilly.

I learned a few things from this book but even when following the script samples, I experienced issues compiling. Beyond the code samples, there seemed to be very little substance to this book.

David Ives is brilliant and this is a collection of some of his plays, all of which are fill of clever dialog and witty situations. I think he is one of America's best playwrights.
