The energy of this book is palpable!

I received Sharon Anne Klingler's latest book, Power Words: Igniting Your Life with Lightning Force free from Hay House Publishing for review. And to be honest, I assumed that this would be another one of those "how-to" affirmation books filled with rehashed and recycled information. But after scanning the Table of Contents, I was eager to jump right in and start trying out some of the exercises created by the author.

Power Words: Igniting Your Life with Lightning Force contains so many creative and original ideas that one may need to get a separate notebook in order to keep a log all of the practices and suggestions, along with the accompanying results. I found that this was a good way for me to discover which "trigger words" (a term coined by the author) worked best with my energy.

One of the most powerful exercises in the book involved taking a few commonly used words in our language and then breathing them in to get a feel for their different energies. The chapter titled, "Planning for Success? Make Your Life a Verb," offered up some fantastic ways in which words can be used to keep the practitioner in the present as well as in action. The first section of the appendix in the back of the book provides the reader with a short list of what the author defines as "lifting words," which is pretty self-explanatory. Appendix 2 has information about colors and their word associations. And finally the third appendix lists a handful of alternatives to the affirmation, "Bless you."

Power Words: Igniting Your Life with Lightning Force is a fun and delightful book that does double-duty as an energy booster. I'm so glad I dropped my assumptions and gave it a chance.

Wow! Power Words Makes You See and Use Words in a Whole New Way

This book is so much better than the typical 'positive thinking' books out there. "Power Words" teaches you how to feel word energy and how to truly use words as tools -- not just for communication, but to create new insights, new actions, and new results. I've found that power words can help in so many different kinds of situations. I've used power words to get back on top of old projects, help with stubborn people, make decisions when I'm confused, refocus when I'm distracted, and in so many other ways. The opportunities to use them are unlimited.
I've given this book to a number of my friends, and every one of them has become so excited about the impact that using power words has had -- for running, for tennis, for meditating, and definitely for feeling great even when energy's low. I've started to discover some new power words for myself, too. My friends and I agree that power words are like some kind of new wonder drug that makes you feel fantastic. They're free, and they're always available. (Actually, power words may be more like having a treadmill or home gym. After all, you do have to remember to use them to get their benefits!)
I couldn't recommend this book more. It's unique. And more than that, it's life-altering. I'm resolved to bring power words into my daily life. With them I'm sure my daily life will become an extraordinary life!

It was okay

I don't have much experience with how words can impact your life other than the few daily affirmations I have. This book is written in a very straightforward way and easy to understand, but I had a very hard time staying interested. It contains a lot of good information - but in my opinion, it's not very reader engaging.

I stuck with it though, and finished the book. There were a few practices that I will try out, but in all I didn't really come out with much more than I had going into it. Basically it says that using positive words will attract positive into your life, and so the like with negative words. It gives different suggestions on how people can incorporate positive "power" words into their daily activities and how to eliminate negative words with a positive replacement.

It was a good book, it just felt to me a very long and tedious read. I had to force myself to stay focused, I wish the author had been more engaging in the examples to draw the reader in more.

I am not one to write reviews but I just have to say that I love this new book by Ellie. I have all of her I previous cookbooks and I really like her philosophy when it comes to eating - she's realistic but also health conscious. Her recipes always turn out for me and she uses normal, easy to find ingredients.

This particular book really helps to prepare meals in a way that allows you to have extra for another day, or plan ahead so that whipping up a delicious meal on a weekday is a breeze. I pre-ordered this book and received it a few days ago, and have already cooked a number of things from it. The pumpkin waffles were a delight and even my picky kids gobbled them up. I also made the salmon, feta and orzo skillet meal and it was amazing - very different than how I've ever prepared salmon, and once again my kids tried it and liked it! I was shocked. I have not been able to get them to eat salmon before this dish. I'm looking forward to making more delicious recipes in the coming weeks.

While the pictures are lovely, I do wish there were more of them included as I am usually inspired to cook when I see a picture of the finished dish - there are a number of pictures but I'd say one for every 4 recipes. There is complete nutritional information provided for each recipe which I find very helpful when trying to plan my meals. Interestingly enough, there are no dessert recipes included but you will find plenty of recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and sides. The index is also very well done. The book is beautifully published and unlike her previous books it doesn't have a dust jacket. Finally, Ellie's warm personality shines through in this book as in her previous books - she seems like such a lovely person. I love that she seems to be such a foodie, like me - and I appreciate that she shares ways to enjoy good food with a healthy twist. I will definitely be recommending this book to my family and friends.

Beautiful, well-thought out cookbook

Ellie Krieger's beautiful new cookbook just arrived today and I've thoughtfully flipped through every single page and read through many recipes that sounded fantastic (as always -- duh, it's Ellie)! This book has a lot of heart and soul poured into it. I can tell you that because she has thought of everything. The recipes' descriptor tells you different ways to enjoy it then below the recipe, she tells you how to refrigerate and serve later or freeze and serve later. There is info on serving size, calories, and even the vitamins and minerals are in it. Just shows you that she knows food and done her homework! I will post again after I've cooked up some recipes but I've bought and enjoyed all of her past books and I know that these recipes will work!

I never knew how little I knew about cheating until I read this book. Being able to gain so much insight in one book is phenomenal. For example, I didn't know there were "5 types of cheaters". This book also describes signs of cheating that are not commonly talked about. The failings of schools have been discussed and analyzed from a dazzling array of perspectives. In this study, the author, a professor at the Harvard School of Education and a practitioner of cognitive science based on a theory of multiple intelligences, adopts a credibly innovative approach, contending that even when a school appears to succeed, "it typically fails to achieve its most important missions." The root flaw, as he views it, is a lack of "genuine understanding"--as opposed to "acceptable mastery"--on the student's part. Gardner sees access to better education in the alliance of three potential teammates: the intuitive preschooler, the traditional older child working through a curriculum, and an expert/teacher capable of extending skills and understandings in new ways. One answer to why so many students lose their enthusiasm for school is found here, as well as promising proposals for school reform, like museum collaborations and apprenticeship projects. Gardner's study offers a wealth of material for significant school restructuring.

A convincing call to reexamine the way children learn in their earliest years, and to make use of those new findings in classrooms. MacArthur fellow Gardner (Education/Harvard; To Open Minds, 1989, etc.) developed a theory that human beings learn and perform through multiple intelligences (seven, to be precise, from verbal to kinesthetic and interpersonal). His own and other studies in these areas revealed that students who may be letter-perfect in a school subject such as physics fail spectacularly in transferring that knowledge from classroom exercises to problems in the real world. Even adults abandon book learning and invoke pictures of the world--including stereotypes about the forces of gravity or about skin color--that they constructed as early as five years old. The emperor is exposed as being not only naked but ignorant. If such early childhood ``schema,'' as Piaget called them, are so tenacious, then harness them for learning in the advanced classroom, Gardner advises. He recommends reevaluating the concept of apprenticeships and using the hands-on, multimedia techniques seen in children's museum programs. The developmental theories of Piaget and Chomsky are respectfully challenged, the push to ``cultural literacy'' and ``back to basics'' less respectfully. At issue is the unexamined idea. Gardner calls for schools and teachers to encourage personal ``Christopherian confrontations,'' the encounter between belief and reality that Christopher Columbus presented when he did not sail off the edge of the world. An exciting proposal for restructuring schools in order to guide students to a genuine understanding of the world. How to School the Unschooled Mind

Howard Gardner's book The Unschooled Mind is an excellent source for teachers and administrators alike. It examines the different kinds of learners and how current educational practices are not addressing those learners. By reading this book, teachers and administrators will gain a better sense of cognitive development and can therefore design curriculum to best suit their students' needs. The Unschooled Mind is organized in a very pleasing format. There are three main sections. The first section tells about cognitive, psychological, and educational research, including the theory of multiple intelligences. In the second section, educational norms and institutions are discussed. The third section of the book gives suggestions for solutions and calls for educational reform. I especially enjoyed the format of the book because it sequences theory, practice, and reform. The main question addressed is why students do not master what they should be learning. Gardner states that educators have traditionally accepted rote and ritualistic learning. However, does this show genuine understanding? Even "successful" students often do not possess a deep sense of class material. Teachers need to take into account multiple intelligences and realize that not all students learn, solve problems, or undertake tasks in the same manner. People acquire knowledge in different ways. Studies have shown that children can master complex domains, but not those designed in school curriculums. It was so fascinating for me to read about developmental theorists and, especially, to compare the studies of Darwin and Piaget to modern research about brain development. Since society, education, and culture influence children as they grow, it is important for teachers to create meaningful learning experiences. A quote in the second section of the book completely intrigued me: "By the time the child has reached the age of seven or so, his development has become completely intertwined with the values and goals of the culture. (Gardner, chapter 5) It made me think of how my job as a teacher-in addition to the jobs of administrators, who design school curriculum-is so important. If educators, as experts, design school curriculum, they contribute to the understanding of learners. So how should knowledge be taught so that it provides that deep sense of understanding we seek? Reading the examples of content areas and students' understandings and interpretations of them was very interesting to me because it helped me to see the importance of constructing instructions well. It also helped me to see the great variety of understandings that students have and how to take those different understandings into account for assessment purposes. Education today calls for constructive, activity-centered learning (a la John Dewey). I know that my entire school day does not consist of strictly collaborative learning. Learning basic skills requires some drilling. I just need to find the best balance in my teaching. The Unschooled Mind helped me realize how important parents and teachers are to children's lives and how they need to take great care in creating meaningful learning experiences for their children.

Howard Gardner is a brilliant man!!

I read this book a few years ago as part of a course in my Master's degree program. I had some familiarity with Gardner's work, mainly the seven intelligences. However, until an educator has read this book, the educator can not apply the seven intelligences in the class room or teach effectively.
My dad once told me that I never learn anything until I break something. I was 16 and had just wrecked my first car. I never crashed again. This is the concept behind Gardner's book. We learn from our experiences. We learn by applying knowledge in real life situation. Knowledge is not necessarily power, but it is part of the equation. After teaching concepts in my class with follow-up assignments which were real life activities/experiences, I saw test results improve and student interest increase dramatically. Students only want to learn what is useful to them so teachers must show subject matter to be relavent to the student's lives. Gardner explains how a students mind can grow through these means.
This is a great read even if you are a parent who want to explore how your child learns. Highly recommended!

Using Unschooled Minds in the Special-Needs classroom

I have read and re-read Unschooled Minds by Howard Gardner to better understand how my colleagues and me, as teachers, can better instruct our students with regard to each student's cognitive and skills abilities in mind.
Gardner's theory that each child contains several intelligences (i.e., mathematical/logistical, intrapersonal, interpersonal, kinesthetic, with one or more predominating) appears to be a viable thoery in my experiences as an instructor. This book has allowed me to understand why some children simply don't respond to the traditional ways of teaching. Reading this has reduced the frustration level for both me and my students, and has let me expand my methods and level of instruction. Since I also am in favor of apprenticeships for students (matching their skills w/ jobs) and taking risks, this book appealed to my own philosophies.
Possibly the best legacy of Gardner's teaching is that many children who would otherwise be left-for-dead instructionally are now being taught to good results using Gardner's methods, including my own.

Excellent and nearly indestructable

I've been able to purchase all three sets so far, and can attest to their use and durability.

I had some fall out of my gaming kit and into the snow, I collected them all, except two I missed. The first I found the next day, the second a week later, sopping wet.

Despite the elements and the time passed, they dried out, and even the one a week later was only slightly warped. Pressing between two books fixed it just fine.

Great Accessory

This and the other Dungeon Tiles are a great visual accessory for any D&D game. Whether you use the prepainted miniatures or counters, sometimes it is difficult to describe a dungeon accurately. These tiles eliminate that problem. A great purchase

Hidden Crypts should have stayed hidden.

Although an improvement over the "Arcane Hallways" set, I was still unimpressed. There are too many little pieces (once again) that take too long to set up. Some of the larger pieces are useful though. I wish they would just release sets of building floor plans, in order to create quick towns, instead of one building per set.

Awful censorship gone mad.

I stopped reading and applied for a refund as soon as I recognised that this is the new politically correct edition. Nsmes hve been changed for one, as apparently readers would find offense or be warped by characters named 'Jo' or 'Fanny'.

Do NOT purchase this new edition on principle. Do yourself or your kids a favour, and buy the ORIGINAL, untouched edition.

Don't buy new.

My mother had a love affair with books. It was deep and strong and beautiful and she passed it along to all seven of her children. The three Faraway Tree books were part of this affair, and deeply cherished in my family, as they led to many hours of imaginative play. So when I received the first two books in this beloved series, I was shocked and dismayed to find that since my childhood, they have been watered-down and sanitized for today's jaded readers. While I understand that Fanny and Di.ck are less palatable than their modern, politically correct counterparts, I do wonder, what on earth was wrong with Jo, and Bess? And sausage rolls? Pop Biscuits? I must say, Pop Cakes just don't have the same ring to them. These things mark cultural differences that today's children (and adult readers!) could do with a bit more of, cocooned as they often are by lives filled with technology and self rather than travel and understanding. I was grossly disappointed. If you read these books as a child, find an early edition. Anything else will be a waste of money. If anyone knows where to find said early edition, I would love to know!

A favorite!!

After years of searching for the version that matches the other two in the series that I have (Folk of the Faraway Tree and The Magic Faraway Tree), I finally broke down and bought this one. It's a very nice, quality hardback book with nice illustrations. The Illustrations are not as lovely as the older versions of the other two books of the series that I have and they changed the girl's names from Bess and Fanny to Beth and Frannie (to modernize them I guess), but I found that kind of annoying. However, overall, it's a very nice book and I recommend the series to everyone. I love Enid Blyton books (The Wishing Chair series being another favorite) and I have this one many many times to my two boys.

Kindergarten-Grade 4 - Beautifully illustrated in two distinct styles, this book introduces readers to a Zen approach to the world, wrapped in a story about three siblings and their new neighbor, a panda. One by one, the children visit Stillwater, enjoying his company and listening to him tell a brief tale that illustrates a Zen principle. Each time, there is a link between the conversation shared by Stillwater and his visitor and the story he tells; it's somewhat tenuous in regard to the two older siblings, quite specific in the case of Karl, the youngest. The tales invite the children to consider the world and their perceptions from a different angle; for Karl, the panda's story gently but pointedly teaches the benefits of forgiveness. Richly toned and nicely detailed watercolors depict the "real world" scenes, while those accompanying the Zen lessons employ black lines and strokes on pastel pages to create an interesting blend of Western realism and more evocative Japanese naturalism. Taken simply as a picture book, Zen Shorts is interesting and visually lovely. As an introduction to Zen, it is a real treat, employing familiar imagery to prod children to approach life and its circumstances in profoundly "un-Western" ways. An author's note discusses the basic concept of Zen and details the sources of Stillwater's stories. Limpidly beautiful watercolors and a wry, puckish gentleness mark these three Zen stories, one for each of three children. Michael, Karl and Addy discover a giant panda in their backyard. ("He spoke with a slight panda accent.") His name is Stillwater, and he tells Addy the tale of his Uncle Ry, who gave the robber who could find nothing to steal in his house his own tattered robe. (The robber, in the black-and-white illustrations that mark the three stories, is a raccoon.) When Michael comes to visit, he climbs a tree to sit with Stillwater, who tells the story of the farmer's luck. Karl comes to visit carrying too much stuff for Stillwater's wading pool, and hears just the right story for him. The pictures are as full of peace and solace-and humor-as the text: The title page has the panda dancing in a pair of oversize shorts; the cake Addy brings for tea has a stalk of bamboo in it for Stillwater; Karl and the panda bow to each other at the end of their day. A small still book

If at first you don't create the world's most philosophically sound picture book, try try again. When illustrator and sometime graphic novelist (though you wouldn't know it from his bookflaps) Jon J. Muth turned a Tolstoy short story into the picture book, "The Three Questions", response from professional journals was mixed. People liked the IDEA of making Tolstoy accessible to children but "The Three Questions" just didn't seem to cut it. When the book didn't get much in the way of attention, Muth could've abandoned the whole idea of bringing larger ideas to very young people. Instead, he came right back with a heaping plateful of Zen with panda. "Zen Shorts" is the result and remains perhaps the most beautiful picture to be published in the year of 2005. To call it classy doesn't even begin to cover it.

A panda appears in the backyard of three children. He is holding a large red umbrella (one that he holds over the three children as they talk) and is extraordinarily polite. The book notes that he, "spoke with a slight panda accent". With this initial meeting, the children slowly befriend their new neighbor, Stillwater. When Addy comes to his home with a housewarming gift, Stillwater returns the favor with the gift of a small story about his Uncle Ry. Michael visits the panda at the top of a tall tree. There they discuss, with the help of another story, what luck is and how a person can never really know what is going to happen to them next. Karl, the youngest of the three, brings too many toys to swim with in Stillwater's wading pool. At the end of the day, the two have had a good time, but Karl has wasted much of it by being mad at his older brother. On the way home, Stillwater tells a tale of letting go of what you cannot change. The final image is of Karl perched triumphantly on Stillwater's paw as Addy and Michael look on bemusedly. An Author's Note follows, wherein Mr. Muth defines "Zen" and explains that this book is a grouping of "Zen shorts". These stories are intended to, "hone our ability to act with intuition". Darn tooting.

I'm a praise lavisher by nature. I'm all too eager to say that this or that book is the best in its category. Last year I decided that Jeannie Baker's, "Home" was the most beautiful picture book of 2004. "Zen Shorts", by extension, is the most beautiful picture book of 2005. When I say this, though, I don't want my statement taken lightly. Jon J. Muth has balanced jaw-droppingly beautiful watercolors with a story that speaks with both humor and serenity. Had Mr. Muth preferred to create a book that talked about Zen principles for the preschool-set, he could have done so quite easily without bothering with visual or verbal humor. "Zen" in general is a pretty heady subject, eh? The kind of concept that many an American adult still scratches their head in wonder at. How much more impressive then that Stillwater becomes such an adorable and amusing friend. After telling Addy the story of his uncle, the two are next seen painting pictures of one another in ink, hands gripping their paintbrushes in the correct position. When the two move on to cake, Addy spears a piece for herself while Stillwater's pink tongue reaches out to the bamboo garnish. I especially enjoyed the moment where Karl and Stillwater fill his kiddie pool up with too many toys. Stillwater stands in his bathing suit, his face impassive. Heck, he doesn't even have distinguishable mouth or eyes in the shot! Next to him, Karl has crossed his arms in a huff of anger at his own mistake. These illustrations seem to be perfectly balanced between what is true and what you wish was true. I would love to lie on the stomach of a friendly and wise panda like Michael does. Many a child will feel the same way.

Muth's small zen shorts act as little stories within a story and compliment the larger action perfectly. The shorts are illustrated differently than the rest of the book so that, instead of watercolors, they are lined in thick black ink. Without drawing undue attention to himself, Muth is showing us that he can draw in completely different styles without so much as breaking a sweat. The stories themselves may be familiar to some adults. I particularly remembered "The Farmer's Luck", and love the final amusing image Muth chooses to close out this tale. Kids reading this book may be confused by the selflessness displayed in both the first and the third story towards the undeserving. Intelligent adults will find a way to use such parables towards furthering their kids' understanding of the wider world. The final tale ("A Heavy Load") may require some explanations to children when it comes to the (for lack of a better word) punchline. Otherwise, they are instantly understandable to young readers.

You would be wise to pair this book with Jack Prelutsky's, "If Not For the Cat" if you wanted a storytime tinged with East Asian influences. If you yourself are an adult and you are impressed by his visual style, you may wish to seek out his work on "Moonshadow", or other graphic novels that bear his hand. I, personally, would be amiss if I didn't also talk up his fabulous, "Gershon's Monster" by Eric Kimmel. To my mind, "Zen Shorts" is Muth's best picture book work thus far. This is possibly because it was written with his own words. If we can expect more books of this nature to come out with Muth's voice accompanying them, we can count ourselves lucky indeed. Again, I say that there is little doubt that this is the most beautiful picture book of 2005.

Wondeful Vehicle for Discussion with Children

I read this to my children last evening. It resulted in a lengthy discussion about anger, giving, forgiving, wealth, and life. A wonderful book with a structure that is conducive to discussion. Divided into three parts with stories that Stillwater tells to visiting siblings, each story is an opportunity to stop and discuss.

Best kids book purchase in some time

I picked this up on a whim because of the title and the gorgeous illustrations. I got a real treasure! My five year old son loves to have it read to him, and I love reading it.
