As a special aid to classroom work or self-study, this practical text includes an extensive selection of 233 problems and answers that test the student's mastery of every section of the book. In addition, a highly useful Appendix contains "A Collection of Formulas" for determining the load per inch deflection of linear springs, the load per radian rotation of rotational springs, the natural frequencies of simple systems, the longitudinal and torsional vibration of uniform beams, the transverse or bending vibrations of uniform beams, and the vibrations of rings, membranes, and plates.
When Mechanical Vibrations was first published in 1934, it was a pioneering work in a field which had just been introduced in America's technical schools. In fact, the author wrote it to assist him in teaching the subject at Harvard. "During the life of the book," he says, "from 1934 on, the art and science of engineering has grown at an astonishing rate and the subject of vibration has expanded with it." Professor Den Hartog's constant revisions have kept his book at the forefront of this vital subject, as useful today as its earlier versions were to students of the past.

J. P. Den Hartog: The Reprint Engineer
J. P. Den Hartog (1901–1989), who taught for most of his career at MIT, was one of the founders of the Dover reprint program in engineering. As the author of several books that Dover reprinted and still has in print, and as an advisor from the 1950s until just a few years before his death in 1989, Professor Den Hartog gave invaluable advice concerning books of lasting interest and importance in his field.

Not many books in engineering have a productive shelf life spanning several decades. Among the exceptions are these four books of Professor Den Hartog, which Dover reprinted and occasionally revised in later printings from 1961 through 1987: Mechanics, 1961, Strength of Materials, 1961, Mechanical Vibrations, 1985, and Advanced Strength of Materials, 1987. Still widely read and cited by authors in these areas, Den Hartog's books are a tribute to his gift for exposition and clarity.

The J. P. Den Hartog Award, established in 1987, is presented in recognition of lifetime contributions to the teaching and practice of vibration engineering.

Theory applied to practical problems

I purchased Hartog's book together with Meirovitch's Fundamentals of Vibrations and Kelly's Schaum's Mechanical vibrations. I must say that Hartog and Meirovitch complement each other beautifully whereas Kelly's book feels a little superfluous.

It is clear from the book that Hartog himself had extensive experience with real world vibration analysis. The theory is developed while analyzing a range of mechanical mechanisms and electrical circuits that frequently are important in real vibrating systems. Hartogs book is therefore useful as a reference, for instance for how the piston excite vibrations in the engine frame. Although quite old, the book does not feel dated. The type setting is old school with numerous small but clear figures.

Meirovitch's book is more modern in its presentation. Meirovitch prepares the reader for modern methods of vibration analysis such as frequency response analysis of continuous systems with the aid of the finite element method. Meirovitch also make extensive use of matrix algebra and analytical mechanics. However, Meirovitch lacks in practical examples.

Overall I recomend the book, especially in combination with Meirovitch.

The leading classic in vibration engineering.

This book was first published in 1934 by McGraw-Hill and remained through 4 editions for 40 years one of McGraw-Hil's all-time best sellers in engineering and physics. It is filled with practical examples and continues to be a major source for down-to-earth explanations of vibrational phenomena. Partly because of the intellectual and practical impact of this book, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers established the ASME J. P. Den Hartog Award that recognizes life-ltime contributions to the teaching and practice of vibration engineering. All active workers who I know in vibration engineering own and frequently consult this book.

A bit outdated but still useful

This book was copyrighted in 2004 so if you are using it for homeschool (or for anything, for that matter) you will have to supplement the material to reflect the changes in nutrition science. It was, when I was looking for a middle school nutrition textbook, the only one available; so in the light of beggars not being choosers, this text ~does~ have some useful basic information and idea-starters, plus the food preparation handbook is pretty great.

About the Author
Walter Kaufmann was a philosopher and poet, as well as a renowned translator of Friedrich Nietzsche. His books include Nietzsche: Philosopher, Psychologist, Antichrist, From Shakespeare to Existentialism, and Existentialism: From Dostoevsky to Sartre. He was a Professor of Philosophy at Princeton University, where he taught after receiving his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1947 until his death in 1980. He held visiting appointments at many American and foreign universities, including Columbia, Cornell, Heidelberg, Jerusalem, and the Australian National University; and his books have been translated into Dutch, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish.

It has a great selection of writings

This is the book that introduced me to Existentialism in graduate school. It has a great selection of writings, and unlike most books on Existentialism is clear, not turgid. I now think of Existentialism as being a mood rather than a system of thought, and many of these writings are literary not academic, but that is a good thing. I took a graduate seminar on Existentialism from the man who edited this book, Walter Kaufmann. He was acerbic, but a great teacher. His emphasis was not on what philosophers taught, or what arguments they gave for their positions, but what kind of men they were. He was more concerned that his students embraced challenging, creative, heroic lives, than he was about teaching them how to parse obscure and usually fallacious arguments.

All the pluses and minuses of "samplers."

Walter Kaufmann's book, "The Faith of a Heretic" was the work which brought me to study philosophy, and I have been a fan of his writings and translations ever since, but, like some reviewers have said, if your interest is to study a particular author, this book is not for you. It may not even be for you if you wish to study Existentialism. But, if what you want is to get some feeling for what this Existentialism thing is all about, this collection is far superior to, for example, William Barrett's "Irrational Man", who, I believe makes a special mish mash of the 19th century precursors of Existentialism.

One example is with the writings of Dostoyevsky, who wrote very long, intricately plotted novels, but to find those passages which uniquely identify his perception of the existential condition of life, you could spend days. Here, in a very nice, concise selection, is exactly the passage you want, from "Notes from Underground". I would say the same about the other literary selections from Kafka, Rilke, Camus, and perhaps Sartre. Oddly, I would skip over the Nietzsche selections and read Nietzsche's complete books, especially "The Gay Science" and "Beyond Good and Evil". He wrote in aphorisms, but his arguments spanned several numbered paragraphs.

I suspect that reading snippets of Heidegger is a total waste of time, but I think Jaspers piece of Nietzsche and Kierkegaard is a nice piece for this collection. To those who complained about the binding and printing, I have no such problems with my latest edition.

Lloyd Alexander�(1924-2007) was the author of more than forty books for children and adults, including the beloved children's fantasy series, the�Chronicles of Prydain, one of the most widely read series in the history of fantasy and the inspiration for the animated Disney film, The Black Cauldron. The Best in Young Adult Fiction

In the first book of the Westmark Trilogy, Theo asks, "Even if the cause (of war) is good, what does it do to the people who stand against it? And the people who follow it?" The answer to those questions is The Kestrel. Using a panorama of characters, Alexander shows war from all perspectives: from the leaders,' from the bystanders,' and from the soldiers.' Alexander draws on his own experiences of World War II to give the reader (of any age) insight into the moral complexities of war.
The main character is once again Theo. When Westmark is attacked by neighboring Regia, Theo is forced with a dilemma. Should he serve his love (Mickle) or should he serve his country? Eventually, Theo is compelled to join fighting along with Florian's forces because of a memory of his cowardice at the battle of Nierkeeping in "Westmark." Fighting a guerrilla-style war under the command of Justin, Theo begins to be baptised by fire. He sees comrade after comrade killed. He becomes filled with hatred for the enemy army. Eventually, he is given command and becomes Colonel Kestrel, a semblance of Theo who commits unspeakable acts in the name of war.
Alexander studies the morals of war through his characters. The reader is forced to examine psychological aspects of war in Theo. War is also shown through a leader's eyes with the examinations of Mickle, Theo, Justin, and Florian. The devastating effect of war on the countryside is shown from following Sparrow and Weasel.
The Kestrel is a brilliant continuation of the series. The plot is magnificent, and it has so much depth. The characterizations are excellent, and the issues studied are compelling. The Westmark Trilogy is a great piece of young adult literature. I've read some of the great war novels like All Quiet on the Western Front and The Red Badge of Courage, but the trilogy is better written and with more depth. Everyone really should read these excellent novels.

A trilogy by Lloyd Alexander, the grand master of fantasy!

The second book of the Westmark Trilogy, the adventures of Westmark continues in "The Kestrel". Theo is now traveling through Westmark to learn more about the country. He and Mickle, now known as Princess Augusta, are hoping to be married after he returns. But suddenly and without warning, Westmark is thrown into turmoil as the neighboring country of Regia has declared war on Westmark. Theo is once again forced into making a hard decision, will he stay in the sidelines or fight for his country? Eventually, he joins under the command of Florian and his people to fight a guerrilla war against the troops of Regia. As he sees brave and honorable men die one by one, Theo finds himself changing into a merciless commander and a stranger to himself...
For those familiar with Lloyd Alexander's award winning series, "The Prydain Chronicles", I can honestly and truly recommend this other series written by the 'grand master of fantasy'. A bit more serious with dark overtones, "The Westmark Trilogy" deals with realistic events that can almost convince you that the series is based on true historical events. Through the series you will be given a chance to explore the characters as they struggle with forces beyond their control. Lloyd Alexander gives a realistically accurate study of human nature and psychology of war. I must say, after reading this book, I was left in thoughtful silence, musing over what I had just finished reading. It is not very often we Young Adults are given books which leaves you in a state of contemplation
As I said, I can highly recommend the thrilling and psychologically filling "Westmark Trilogy". Best to read in order. But the faint-hearted be warned, this book and the next one in the series are somewhat violent and gritty since the main theme is about war. But nothing too bad to turn away lovers of a good series! Pick these series up!

The Best of an Excellent Series

While "Westmark" (the previous book) and "The Beggar Queen" (the final book in this trilogy) are excellent books, this is the best, because -- well, because it's the one that has the power to hurt the most as you see what characters you care for are forced into by circumstance, the twists of fate and their own sense of duty.
Former Chief Minister Cabbarus, forced into exile in "Westmark" plots with the uncle of the King of neighbouring Regia to invade Westmark and re-establish a "proper" society. Theo wanders the country, trying to get a grip on how he feels about the thought of Mickle, the street urchin he fell in love with in "Westmark" becoming Queen... with himself intended as Prince Consort.
When the invasion begins, Mickle finds herself forced to become a military commander, and Theo finds himself among Florian's "children" again, fighting the Regians as an irregular, eventually rising to the rank of colonel among Florian's forces.
And Alexamder takes the chance -- without seeming preachy or heavy-handed -- to present us with just a bit (PG13 rating or so) of the horror of war and what it does to even good people.

And then he hands the reader an even hotter potato to examine than that -- he asks us to consider the after-effects of violence (even "in a good cause") on the people who have found themselves forced into it.
And it hurts -- in a good way -- to see what some people must give up so that others may still have it.
(David Drake presents a much more violent -- and most *definitely* adult -- look at much the same questions in his military SF novel "Redliners".)
In the end, everyone is forced to compromise somewhat, and all *appears* to be well.
On the other hand, this *is* the second olume of a trilogy.

Ok songbook

Ok book. I guess it features most of the main themes, in shortened versions though. Sadly it resembles the songbook to the second movie which means songs are often split into the themes aka. 2-pages thingies. Moreover, there are no translations of the Khuzdul or the Sindarin lyrics provided which lessens the experience somewhat. Most of the songs are battle songs missing rendering them to sound very weird on the piano. Sadly, all the nice pictures etc. That were featured in the songbook for the first and second movie have been reduced to a bare minimum, making this songbook appear like a cheap print on demand thing. All in all, it's not a bad songbook per se, but strangely lacking, especially since it's even shorter than the prior book and the epic title music has been chopped into tiny bits, missing lots of the original score. Nothing special, but nothing horrible. I wouldn't buy it again.

AMAZING music!!!!!!!!! i don't know how long I've been playing but it's been a couple years and i'm now early advanced late intermediate level. the music in here is about the level. probably on the late intermediate level. i play out of this book all the time.

you absolutely will not regret buying this book and if you do then you're dumb

I never write reviews for products, so this is a first but I felt some weird sort of obligation to do this. I've been admiring Bo Burnham's work for a few months now, so I'm not a super dedicated, long term fan by any means. I found a few of his standup videos a couple months ago and was so impressed by the depth of his comedy and even more so by the fact that he's in his early 20s. I find that people give him grief for being young and for coming from the internet but if you actually listen to his comedy, you can tell that it's very well thought out and that he's a very smart person, well beyond his years. So I bought the book, expecting it to be hilarious and well thought out, and thats exactly what it is. What impresses me the most is the variation that exists between the poems, not all of them are going to make you laugh. Some of them are pretty deep, and deal with serious issues and what I love is that he doesn't try to make you laugh every second you are reading it. He reaches this amazing level of introspection that is so palpable and relatable (at least for me) that blows my mind. That being said, you will laugh when you read this book. There are plenty of poems that had me doubled over in intense laughter. Bo's very talented and very dedicated, and I can't wait to see what he comes up with next, whatever it is I trust it will be spectacular. So basically, buy the book (it's good).

Perfectly balanced book of poetry

I absolutely love this book. I'd like to think that my personal bias for Bo Burnham (following and adoring his comedy since the youtube days) doesn't have anything to do with my recommendation for anyone and everyone to get a hold of a copy of this book.

The balance between silly, laugh-out-loud funny, disturbing, and good poetry is astonishing. Even some of the disturbing or silly poetry contains excellent use of literary devices such as alliteration, rhyming, irony, satire, etc.

I think it is inevitable that a comparison between "Egghead" and Shell Silverstein books will be drawn. Whether you think Silverstein is better because he is a true poet and not a comedian with a poetry book or not, it can't be denied that there is an uncanny resemblance between the two. The works have many similar qualities (writing style and illustration) and are both excellent works of poetry. However, what's special about Bo's book is that it's dirtier and more appropriate for an older age. The description in the information is really very true, "...book that will make you think, laugh and think, 'why did I just laugh?'"

And lastly, the illustration puts the book over the top for me. Each drawing is so detailed and well done, and really adds something to the book. I have very high praise for Chance Bone. And of course for Bo, for once again being so incredibly talented.

Ginzburg’s influential book has been widely regarded as an early example of the analytic, case-oriented approach known as microhistory. In a thoughtful new preface, Ginzburg offers his own corollary to Menocchio’s story as he considers the discrepancy between the intentions of the writer and what gets written. The Italian miller’s story and Ginzburg’s work continue to resonate with modern readers because they focus on how oral and written culture are inextricably linked. Menocchio’s 500-year-old challenge to authority remains evocative and vital today.

Carlo Ginzburg has taught at the University of Bologna, the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. The recipient of the 2010 International Balzan Prize, he is author of The Night Battles: Witchcraft and Agrarian Cults in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries and Clues, Myths, and the Historical Method, also published by Johns Hopkins.

The protagonist were nor a cleric and a illiterate peasant, but a cleric and a well read peasant. The details of the daily life at the tome add to the veracity of the tale

A formidable project executed with precision and sensitivity. I enjoyed this book for what it demonstrates as the complexity of a narrative and a (his)story. It also makes helpful arguments about how cultural memory, class, and intellectual history intersect.
