In short, the ordinary mind is a mere creature of circumstances, driven hither and thither by the winds of outside forces, and lacking the guidance of the hand on the wheel, and being without the compass of knowledge; while the Master Mind proceeds in the true course mapped out by Intelligence, and determined by will—with sails set so as to catch the best breeze from the outside world, and steered by the master-hand at the wheel, under the direction of the compass of intelligence. The ordinary mind is like a dumb, driven animal, while the Master Mind is like the strong-willed, intelligent, masterful Man. The average man is a very slave to his thoughts and feelings. A stream of thought and feeling flows through him, moving him hither and thither with little or no voluntary choice on his own part. Even those men who have attained a certain degree of mental mastery do but little more than to feebly steer their mental bark by the rudder of a wobbling will—they do not realize that Mastery is possible to them. Even a well known writer has said: ‘’We do not voluntarily create our thinking. It takes place in us. We are more or less passive recipients. We cannot change the nature of a thought; but we can, as it were, guide the ship by a moving of the helm.’’ It would be truer to say that we can deliberately and voluntarily select and choose the particular wind which is to force our mental boat forward or, changing the figure, to choose and select the particular stream of thought and feeling which is to be allowed to flow through our mind. There are three general conditions of human mentality, viz.: (1) Mental Slavery, in which the mind is the slave and servant of outside forces and influences; (2) Partial Freedom, in which the mind is largely controlled by outside influences, while at the same time a limited amount of voluntary control and direction has been acquired; and (3) Mental Mastery, in which the mental faculties, and emotional organism have been brought under the control of the will and judgment, and the individual is a master of, and not a slave to, environment and circumstances. The great masses of persons are in the first or the above named classes; a comparatively small number have passed into the second class; while a still smaller number have passed into the third class, and have become the Master Minds of their time and place.

Get your mind right

Master Mind by Theron Dumont is a phenomenal work that explains that life is about filling/playing one of two roles, master or slave. A master is one who creates his circumstances. Everyone has at one point or another been a subject of circumstance. However, a slave is one who is the continual victim of circumstances or continually being subjected to external impressions. Master Mind explains how the being of man is represented by a chariot and his Real Self represents the rein, the will: the steeds, the mental states of feeling, emotion, desire, imagination, and the rest. Unless the reigns be strong, they will not be sufficient to control the horses. Unless the charioteer be trained and vigilant, the horses will run away with the chariot and dash to pieces the driver in the general wreck. But controlled and mastered, the fiery steeds will lead forward to attainment and accomplishment, and at the same time will travel the road in safety. Master Mind reiterates and teaches the importance of mastering ones feelings, emotions, desires, thoughts, and most importantly the will. It explains the difference between voluntary and involuntary action. It also discusses the importance of attention and perception. The real question that it all boils down to is mastery or servitude, and if this is what you're currently asking yourself, then this is definitely the book for you. Man must be either the anvil or the hammer. Let each make his choice, and then complain not. Master Mind will definitely cause you to reevaluate all the activities that you face in your life and you how address/perform them. Thus said, if you are a hammer strike your fill, and if you are an anvil stand you still!

Pretty Good

While I didn't enjoy this book as much as some of the other Torey Hayden books I've read, I did like this book.
The troubled children in this book were lovable and as always, Torey worked miracles with them. I really felt her love for them. My favorite of the children was the autistic Boo.
Read this book - you won't regret it.

Torey Hayden, author of "One Child," charts a year in the life of a special education classroom with some unusual and unforgettable students. They include Claudia, an academically gifted, pregnant twelve-year-old; Tomaso, who witnessed the death of his father; Lori, a girl whose abuse left her unable to read and write; and Boo, an autistic boy with a fondness for giving weather reports. How they bond, become a class, and deal with the largely unsympathetic outside world makes for a remarkable story. Even more gratifying is the epilogue, in which we learn that all four made gains after they graduated from Hayden's class, all quite remarkably.

A straightforward account of four unusual children and their extraordinary teacher

Special ed teacher Torey Hayden tells the story of a year within her classroom, when she struggled to help four students -- 12-year-old Claudia, a shy, bright parochial school student who is pregnant; Tomaso, a Mexican 10-year-old who became wild and unreachable after his stepmother murdered his father; seven-year-old Lori, unable to learn after physical abuse at the hands of her biological parents resulted in brain damage; and Boo, also seven, and severely autistic.

Most days, Heyden admits, she was full of frustration, as these four kids aren't exactly easy to work with. In addition, having the four -- with widely different needs -- *together* was also a challenge. But still, something within her refused to give up. Although many others before her had dismissed each of the children as lost, Heyden wanted to believe that wasn't true.

Although it crosses into the realm of potential sap, preachiness or self-admiration, the book never goes there. While Heyden's quest to help the children -- and resulting success with them -- puts her well ahead of others, she never takes on the air of patting herself on the back for it. Rather, she is a mere human; one who often becomes frustrated, as anyone else might be; and far from perfect. Often, as she becomes fixated on the children, Heyden forgets to balance the other areas of her life, which become problematic as a result.

This is a fascinating look at a year in the lives of four different special needs children, and what one caring individual does to try to help them.

yes, bizarre!

This is a wonderful collection of objects, truly an artistic selection of eye-popping, category-crossing, often beautiful things. Each object also has a very very nice description, laying out who made and why, and giving an idea of how it functions. You get battery-operated tongues - think of the uses you can put that to! - and scores of traditional objects such as funery slippers and straw hats or cow-tail medicinal brushes. It is a feast for the imagination, funny, and provocative.
Recommended for industrial designers and art lovers alike.

Good overview, but not detailed

This is a good overview to hand a beginning avionics or flight controls engineer who needs to get familiar with the very basic principles of inertial nav. Good coverage of various types of instruments, but many of the designs covered are outdated and of little use in modern design work. Given the paucity of works in this field, I welcomed it as an introductory text, but you could not perform any serious trade studies for a real design with only the knowledge in this book. It doesn't cover GPS in any depth, or the important topic of GPS/INS blending. Other topics missing are a good intro to optical gyros (Sagnac effect) and the overall integration of nav systems (steering modes, landing systems, cooperative nav, effects on weapons delivery, and so on). Still, for the money, I would recommend it to a neophyte who has some extra cash...you have to start somewhere!

A modern source in a modest body of literature

The technology in the field is quite advanced, and the research is particulary active and in costant evolution. Producing a comprehensive reference is quite difficult but the author delivers clearly the advantages and disadvantages of each system analyzed in the book. As a guide, the work has neatly reached its goal, since it delivers a clear picture of the current state of art and the trend of each system development. In fact the author is covering every subject quite extensively without the dispersion of innumerable specific technical papers, which are, of course, much more detailed but far from comprehending the scope of the whole field.
The only point is the mathematical level,that is maybe too simple for engineers and scientists, and a little bit complicated for the average pilot, one of the most interested user in the field.
