A good mix of walking tours

Wow! I spent time looking at other travel guides on Istanbul, but I gotta say LP got it right with this. A good mix of walking tours, where to eat, drink and party, when to go where and how--see fold out map with transportation map.

It's only 255 pages. There are only eight pages on lodging, which is how a tour book should be. I find lodging information to be useless, unless you're spontaneous.

The layout is easy to follow and efficient. The book breaks down by the popular districts, their layouts and gives you the best of those areas. Completely worth it.

I've traveled Europe and South America a bit and am planning another trip....looking for out of the norm and this guide has certainly put Istanbul on the list. It's well-written, practical, chock-full of vital contact information. I like that it provides history and all the insider info that would make potential travelers feel comfortable. Great job.

You hear him speak

I took the course the book is based on in the Spring of 1973. We students took turns taking notes until the last few where for some reason we ran out of volunteers. The book is an excellent condensing of the lectures. Many of the steps are left out that were presented in the lectures or left for the students to fill in. While there are no explicit exercises in the book, going from one step to the next provides an excellent opportunity to test your understanding. I am in no way an expert in mathematics, but the equations are sufficient to follow point to point.
When I read this book, I can hear him speaking. He would have the day's lecture on a 3x5 card that he would look at at the start and perhaps one more time during the lecture. He had the ability to lecture on GR or quantum mechanics and you would sit there and say "Yes, that makes sense. Now I understand." They you would walk out and start thinking and come to the conclusion that you really didn't understand and that you needed to study it some more. This book lets you do that.

A concise overview of the classical theory.

In his inimitable concise style, with not a word out of place, Dirac offers a 60 page sketch of the classical theory of gtr. Doesn't cover any of the modern theoretical developments and offers not a single figure, but if you have a strong math background and very little time to spare, this is probably the book for you. No problems included, so serious autodidacts should supplement this with another text such as d'Inverno which does have problems.

This is definitely not a book for the weak of heart. Dirac does a brilliant job presenting the material in a concise manner. Still, some concepts are often glossed over, or not explained to an appreciable extent. I found that the Schaum's Tensor Calculus Outline was a good suppliment to this text, since it fills in what Dirac assumes you already know. Overall, I would recommend this book only if you have a strong mathematical background, and an even stronger desire to learn the Theory of Relativity.

I loved little critter books growing up and I'm so glad my son enjoys them too. We had a copy of this one, that was my older brothers from 1984! But for the life of me, we can't find it. Anywhere. Since this one is my son's favorite we had to replace it. A classic story, definitely recommend!

I LOVE THE LITTLE CRITTER!!!

I love Mercer Mayer's Little Critter books! I remember my mother reading them to me when I was a kid and I still love them! (FYI, I'm 35 years old) I think my favorite part about the books have to be the illustrations. The artist always sneaks a cute little ladybug or mouse in the background. The "Little Critter" constantly has hilarious expressions on his face. You cant help but laugh. These books have definitely stood the test of time!

Francine D. Blau is the Frances Perkins Professor of Industrial and Labor Relations and Professor of Economics at Cornell University and a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She is also a Research Fellow of the Institute for the Study of labor (IZA) in Bonn, Germany and of the Center for Economic Studies/Ifo Institute (CESIfo) in Munich, Germany, and a Research Professor at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), Berlin, Germany. She received her Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University and her B.S.�in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University.�She has served as President of the Society of Labor Economists, the Labor and Employment Relations Association, and the Midwest Economics Association; as Vice President of the American Economic Association (AEA); and as Chair of the AEA Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession.� She is a fellow of the Society of Labor Economics, the American Academy of Political and Social Science, and the Labor and Employment Relations Association.� In 2010, she received the IZA Prize for outstanding academic achievement in the field of labor economics; she was the first woman to receive this prestigious award. �In 2001, she received the Carolyn Shaw Bell Award from the AEA Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession.� She is on the Editorial Boards of the�Industrial & Labor Relations Review,�Journal of Labor Economics,�Feminist Economics,�and�The Annals�and is an Associate Editor of�Labour�Economics; she was formerly an editor of the�Journal of Labor Economics, on the Board of Editors of theAmerican Economic Review, an Associate Editor and on the Advisory Board of the�Journal of Economic Perspectives.� Professor Blau has written extensively on gender issues, wage inequality, immigration and international comparisons of labor market outcomes.� She has published articles in leading economics journals and is the author of�Equal Pay in the Office�and, with Lawrence Kahn, of�At Home and Abroad: U.S. Labor Market Performance in International Perspective�(recipient of the Richard A. After a long, successful career, Marianne A. Ferber, Professor of Economics and Women's Studies, Emerita, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, passed away in May 2013, just prior to the publication of the 7th�edition of the textbook. She was born in Czechoslovakia in 1923 and obtained her B.A. at McMaster University in Canada in 1944 and her Ph.D. at the University of Chicago in 1954. She was Distinguished Visiting Professor at Radcliffe (1993-95), president of the Midwest Economic Association (1986-87), and president of the International Association for Feminist Economics (1995-97). She received the Distinguished Alumni Award from McMaster University (1996), the Carolyn Shaw Bell Award from the Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession (2002), and an honorary doctorate from the University of Eastern Illinois (2002). She served for many years on the editorial boards of�Feminist Economics�and of the�Review of Social Economy. She was editor of�Women in the Labor Market, 1998, co-editor of�Work and Family, 1991;�Beyond Economic Man, 1993 (translated into Korean);�Academic Couples, 1997;�Nonstandard Work, 2000, and�Feminist Economics Today, 2003 (translated into Spanish). She published in economics, sociology, education and women's studies journals.� Her passing is deeply mourned by her many friends, colleagues, and admirers, and the many women that she had mentored over the years.

Anne E. Winkler is Professor of Economics and Public Policy Administration at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She is also a Research Fellow at IZA (the Institute for the Study of Labor), Bonn and a Research Affiliate at the National Poverty Center, Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, University of Michigan. She received her Ph.D. in economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and her undergraduate degree in economics from Wesleyan University. Professor Winkler’s main research interests are in the economics of gender, the economics of the family, and welfare and poverty. Her work has appeared in economics and broader social science journals includingJournal of Human Resources,�Research in Labor Economics,�Monthly Labor Review,�Demography,�Journal of Policy Analysis and Management,�Journal of Urban Economics,�and�Management Science. Prof. Winkler previously served as 2nd Vice President of the Midwest Economics Association and as President of the St. Louis Chapter of the National Association for Business Economics (NABE). She currently serves on the editorial boards of�Social Science Quarterly�and�Journal of Labor Research�and is a board member of the AEA’s Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession (CSWEP).

Tell the instructor you can't find this and buy the older, cheaper version.

Only 1 star because 0 is not an option. I normally keep my college text books but gladly will get rid of this. Content is ok but redundant. the staggering price for a paperback is crazy. After every chapter I compared with an earlier, cheaper version. Not much changed. The authors sense of accomplishment must be inline with their profit margin, but both are unwarranted.

Let me declare my interest upfront: I was in Ghana at the same time as Anthony and I became good friends with him and Laura. I hope this doesn't distort my review of what I believe to be a remarkable record of their experiences. Written with brutal honesty; at times heart wrenching, on other occasions hilarious - in a laugh out loud sort of way - but always thought provoking, intelligent and compassionate. For anyone contemplating volunteering in the developing world or interested in West Africa, particularly life in Northern Ghana, this is a wonderful read.

An independent assessment of Ghana

This a must read for every foreigner visiting Ghana. It is an independent and balanced assessment of the Ghanaian way and makes for very interesting reading. Although the writer spent most of his time in the northern most parts of Ghana he has captured accurately the essence of the Ghanaian people having experienced the culture first hand as VSO volunteer, a bandsman/musician and as a tourist.

As a Ghanaian, I was impressed with the writers honesty and fairness and commend the book to all and sundry.
