These linked short stories recount the adventures of a group of men stationed with a Bomber Command squadron in Yorkshire during the Second World War. Among the characters we meet are Tuttle, a pilot officer with the face of an Eton schoolboy, whom "bad luck followed around like an ill-tempered barracuda"; jazz aficionados Ross Sinclair, a dashing Canadian pilot from the prairies, and flight engineer Sergeant Willy Perkins, his bashful sidekick; the adjutant Coombs, a career officer, star-struck by the wife of one of the missing men; the mid-upper gunner shot down and rescued in a memorable encounter with the enemy; the marksman Cornelius Brand, a Canadian rear gunner from Ontario whose deadly accuracy brings him unwanted celebrity; and Phoebe Webb, a green-eyed WAAF whose sirenlike beauty and ill-fated love affairs become Rocklington legend. Their stories and others' are woven together with exciting aerial adventure, against the nostalgic backdrop of wartime England.

About the author: Spencer Dunmore was a schoolboy in Yorkshire, England during World War II and watched bombers limping home to the RAF airfields there. His imagination was fired by this experience to the extent that he became an expert on the war in the air, 1939-1945, and his accounts of the bombers and fighters involved are renowned for their accuracy. Dunmore left Britain for Canada in the mid-50s where he was an advertising executive for many years. Dunmore is now a full-time writer and a private pilot on weekends and resides in Ontario.

About the Author
Spencer Dunmore’s first foray into non-fiction writing, in 1991, resulted in the critically acclaimed bestseller Reap the Whirlwind: The Untold Story of 6 Group, Canada’s Bomber Force of World War II, which he co-wrote with William Carter, Ph.D. This was followed in 1994 by the equally successful Wings for Victory: The Remarkable Story of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan in Canada. Dunmore’s passionate love of flying and of a good story were evident long before, however, in his very popular fiction. His first novel, Bomb Run, was an instant hit, and a string of novels followed, including Tower of Strength, Collision, Final Approach, and No Holds Barred. Squadron, a story collection, is his most recent work of fiction. His works have been translated into many languages and published in more than fifteen countries.

Spencer Dunmore lives in Burlington, Ontario.

What a wonderful discovery!!

Never had even heard of Spencer Dunmore, but with an interest in aviation in World War II, I bought this novel, thinking what could I lose, and that I might even learn a thing or two. Well, did I ever! The main lesson being that Mr. Dunmore can sure enough WRITE! These stories--it's more a collection of stories about a Canadian bomber squadron in England that it's a true novel--capture the reader with their intensity and human truths. I found myself weeping, especially over the story of the mid-upper gunner downed when his aircraft collides with FW 190 into the English Channel. Wounded in both arms, he finds himself being rescued by the "Jerry" pilot responsible for the crash. Floating together on a rubber raft, suddenly the humanity and senselessness of the way become all too apparent to the reader as well as to the mid-upper gunner. This book will remain in my heart and mind for a very long time. Highly recommended.

I read military fiction all the time - especially RAF WW2 books - Fascinating time in history and in aviation. The bravery, love and loss suffered by these airmen is brilliantly portrayed in this simply written book. Anyone with a fondness for the RAF and their nightly struggle over Germany should read this novel - Well done Spencer Dunmore!

It's mandatory. The book is good but I only have it because it is required by my Professor as well as written by my Professor. For me it is just something about the Kindle that is a little frustrating... such as location number instead of page number. But all in all the book serves it purpose.

All of the books that I ordered arrived just like they said they would. Out of all of the books that I have purchased, this book is the best book. As a Behavioral Health Nurse, I facilitate group therapy sessions (for a Partial Hospitalization Program) and like to keep the class interesting. This book has allowed for topics to be discussed in a variety of ways keeping the topics interesting. Patient's are real excited to participate in the activities on what I would like to say is fun Friday. This gives the patient's the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of the subject matter. The spiral bounding is excellent, but what also is a plus for this book is that it comes with a CD to print out the necesary pages instead of bending the book. This is the best investment that I have made in a long time regarding a book purchase.

Calling this volume a reference guide is somewhat misleading; it is, rather, a thorough, well-researched, and highly readable social history of American teenagers in this century. Rollin, a Clemson faculty member who's previously written about children's literature, provides a decade-by-decade account of the roles of the various institutions (church, school, the workplace), technology (radio, movies, television), and changing family dynamics that have informed teenage culture over time. Good historical overviews of world and national events set the scene at the beginning of each chapter, and the author's notes on sources and statistics, as well as an appendix of teen-oriented Internet links at the end further enhance this book. Her observation that "many adultsAparents, educators, and reformersAwere appalled by the popularity of...crude entertainments" refers, interestingly, not to our current anxiety about the effects of violent entertainment on young people but to the age of the NickelodeonAthe early 1900s. Conceived as an overview of American teenagers' lives from 1900 to 1999, this guide is written for teen and adult readers. Using sources from popular magazines to scholarly works, it is a tour through each decade's historical events, slang, music, fashions, school, home, work, and other aspects of culture as experienced by teens. In the preface the author, who teaches Children's and Adolescent Literature at Clemson University, notes that economically disadvantaged and minority teens are underrepresented because of a lack of information.

Each decade (except the years 1900 to 1920, which are covered in a single chapter) receives a treatment of 20 to 50 pages, concluding with a list of references. The chapters are readable, with subtopics shown in bold type. The book concludes with a note on sources used for statistics, a note on sources that were particularly useful, an appendix that gives a sampling of teen-oriented Web sites, and a detailed index.

There are some small problems. The black-and-white photos smattered throughout the text are drab. Though it is only a selection, the sampling of Web sites seems rather ordinary compared to all the possibilities. Also puzzling is the overreliance on some sources. For example, Literature for Today's Young Adults (4th ed., HarperCollins, 1993) is just about the only book on literature that is cited in the lists of references, and Slang and Sociability (Univ. of North Carolina Press, 1996) is the only book on slang. Missing from the references are most book-length treatments of teen conflicts and stresses, books such as David Elkind's All Grown Up and No Place to Go (Addison-Wesley, 1984), Sydney Lewis' A Totally Alien Life-Form: Teenagers (New Press, 1996), and Lynn Ponton's The Romance of Risk: Why Teenagers Do the Things They Do (Basic, 1997).

Despite its limitations, this interesting and well-written reference guide is a useful addition to the field. Its focus might make it a good complement to more comprehensive resources such as Marshall Cavendish's America in the Twentieth Century [RBB Je 1 & 15 95] and Gale's American Decades [RBB N 15 96], both of which Rollin consulted. It is recommended for public, academic, and school libraries where there is interest in the topic, although it will probably not have much appeal for teens themselves.

20th Century Teen Culture: my thoughts

Don't expect any personal commentary from Lucy Rollin in 20th Century Teen Culture. Why? The book, as noted on the front cover, is "A Reference Guide." Although Rollin does a fantastic job documenting the sources of her information, the book lacks personal input. However, it does cover a unique and somewhat uncommon topic: teenagers. Arranged chronologically, the book documents statistics and facts relating to the life of the American teenager from 1900 to the 1990's. Each chapter, which usually covers a decade, includes topics such as teens at home, teens at school, teens at work, money, fashion, slang, leisure, entertainment, movies, music, dancing, dating, sex, drugs, violence, reading, radio, comic strips, magazines, and family dynamics. Lucy Rollin deserves high marks for her dilligent, precise documentation following each chapter. Her references are clearly and correctly documented, which would make the book very ideal for research. She also includes a chapter at the end of the book called "A Note on Sources," which highlights what she felt were her most valuble resources in writing the book. She also includes an appendix of web sites relating to teen culture. Overall, I feel that 20th Century Teen Culture was well-written for what it was, but could have been improved even further. For example, quotations from people or teens themselves would surely have elaborated upon the content. Also, more pictures of substantial size would contribute to the book's visual appeal. Despite being strictly informative, 20th Century Teen Culture is an eye-opening book with countless connections to other works and references, that can surely be appreciated by both teenagers and adults alike.

A reference -- and a good bedside read

Though this work is an excellent, one-of-a-kind compendium of U.S. teen culture in 20th Century, it is also a good bedside read. Pick a chapter for any decade and learn the lingo, rituals, songs, dress, and the larger forces shaping the life of teens -- from war to depression to prosperity. Where else can you read American history from the perspective of how it was shaping, and shaped by, a kid growing up in it? Even if you "found yourself" when you came of age in the United State some decades ago, with this book you'll find out even more.

Great reference book
By one silver hand
If you are interested in a thorough, well researched book of teens in the 20th century, this is certainly it. It is well organized into easy to find categories and includes little fascinating details such as the quirky fads and slang of each era. The only thing I wished it had were more photos and illustrations. Then it would have been "Da Bomb", Man! But since I have other books that serve that purpose, I am still giving this one a 5 star rating for its extensive coverage of the material.

One of the Few Books that's Worth Reading

I have many books that I have bought, read a third of the way through, and put aside as more important things come up. This book is one where I put work aside to make time to read. A strange situation for me.

This books covers a lot of area that I would not have otherwise thought about. It may not go into great depth about things, but that's not it's point, I think. It just wants to tell you enough about the hundreds of things you should think about and if you need any more information, you're free to look into other sources. But for what you should know, this book covers it, and it does it very well.

Thank you, authors, for not wasting my time and money. I just wish others would follow your example.

Extremely Helpful and Easy to Understand!

I chose the 5 star rating because the book was well written, realistic and easy to follow and understand.

This book covers every step from making the decision to become an entrepreneur to understanding sales & marketing and profitability. It addresses areas that are imperative to the success of someone new to being an entrepreneur, and it also serves as a reminder for existing entrepreneurs who want to be better entrepreneurs.

I appreciated the step-by-step format used, as well as the clear and concise manner in which it was written. Reading this book gave me the courage and helped me to decide to become an entrepreneur without apprehension or fear.

I strongly recommend Start Your Own Business for anyone interested in starting a small business, as well as for someone who wants to improve their existing business.

About the Author
Nawal K. Taneja has more than 40 years of experience in the airline industry. As a practitioner, he has worked for and advised major airlines and airline-related businesses worldwide in the areas of strategic and tactical planning. In academia, he has served as Professor and Chairman of the Aerospace Engineering and Aviation Department at The Ohio State University, and an Associate Professor in the Flight Transportation Laboratory of the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. On the government side, he has advised civil aviation authorities in public policy areas such as airline liberalization, air transportation bilateral and multilateral agreements, and the management and operations of government-owned airlines.

Well we all need to give Thanks to Riley Hart for bringing us back to Blackcreek once again. It is such an appropriate time of the year for Return to be released and yes I always had hoped that Riley would one last time bring us back to where it all started with these amazing men.

The book revolves around all three couples Braden and Wes, Gavin and Mason and Cooper and Noah. Their lives have changed and all for he best so there is misconception here for the readers.

Braden is once again up to something that has Wes a little uneasy.

Gavin and Mason are both on a mission of epic portions.

Cooper and Noah.....well this is were it all began so you know how Cooper can be.

Yes it is a happy story and no I will not tell you what goes on with each couple that's Riley's job not mine as a reviewer.

I will tell you this however, if you loved each of the stories from Collide, Stay and Pretend than you will be forever grateful to Ms. Riley that you read Return to Blackcreek.

This was an awesome holiday treat! So much love to Riley for giving this to us. Thank you so much!

Fans of the Blackcreek series...you don't want to miss this! Lots of fun, sweet, sexy times. And plenty of surprises as we catch up with our 3 favorite couples.

I don't do spoilers but I will say this...all the awards for Cooper! ;)
So many feels for all 3 stories and the Epilogue was beyond perfect!

It was so good to hear from all the fellows and their family from Blackcreek. These three stories was so touching to read and such great conclusions to the three books. These guys have so much love for each other and their friends and families. If you read all three books you should definitely get this one.
