After many years of warfare King Abdul Aziz ibn Saud had conquered most of the Arabian peninsula, in no small part due to the discipline and ferocity of the Ikhwan, Fanatical Bedouins and devout Wahhabis, they were absolutely loyal to the King, even against their own tribes.
They were Ibn Saud's shock troops during multiple campaigns against his enemies, but by 1927 when Arabia was subdued the Ikhwan didn't want to stop fighting and forgo the spoils of war. Against the King's orders they attacked into Jordan and Iraq and the revolt began.
No European ever knew more about the Bedouin than did Colonel H.R.P. Dickson. In 1948 while visiting Dickson at his home in Kuwait, Tom Barger inquired about the Battle of Sibila and the Colonel responded with a full account of the Ikhwan revolt that is the basis of this article which was originally written in 1948.
It is a story of blind ignorance, hubris, duplicity and tragedy. The outcome was all but inevitable, however the reader can't help but to speculate about the course of events had the Ikhwan prevailed.

Glimpse into life of the Arabs in the 1930's

Review – Revolt in the Desert An Account of the Ikhwan Revolt
This is two articles in one. First we get an exciting account of the Ikhwan Revolt 1927 - 30 including the Battle of Sibila. This is well told in the concise manner of military men. This is the story of a revolt of the Ikhwan Tribe against Abdul Aziz ibn Saud. The story is interesting and obscure. The description of the battles are revealing of war in the desert.
The real interest in the is the second article. This is the story of Thomas C. Barger's early years in Saudi Arabia. He went there in 1937, shortly after the purchase of oil search rights was purchased, and stayed for at least 3 years, as I understand the story. We hear about his quick marriage just before he left the US. Then we get first hand glimpses of the Arabs at that time. Included is a fascinating account of the Arab Coffee Ceremony. This is more intricate and full of nuances and messages than the English Tea Ceremony. For instance, if you are served a full cup of coffee, it means your welcome is over and it is time for you to leave. There are personal meetings with several of the Royal Family of Saud. There are stories of travel over the best roads at the time, often overrun with sand. There are stories of traveling to distant watering holes.
For those interested in the history of the Third Saud State (Saudi Arabia) this is fascinating stuff. If not interested, forget it.
