About the Author
Mike Henry and Jeremy Thompson are both Consultant Surgeons at the Chelsea and Westminster and the Royal Marsden Hospitals. Being in the heart of centralLondon, their time is often spent treating the complaints of the famous (andno doubt sometimes the infamous), which if nothing else keeps life interesting and enlightening! Mike did his first training in London, Jeremy in Cambridge. Both have held Senior Lecturer posts at major universities in the UK, and have travelled abroad frequently in connection with researchand other projects. Mike's research interests include functional disorders of the large bowel and Jeremy's include adhesion formation and prevention. Both editors are members of the Surgical Research Society. Mike is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, was awarded the Patey Prize of the Surgical Research Society in 1971 and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. Jeremy is a Fellow of the Association of Surgeons and a member of the British Society of Gastroenterology.Outside 'office hours', in addition to compiling this textbook, both editors try to find time for their families and friends, the occasional work-out, skiing holidays, and wining and dining!

needs more depth and detail in certain areas

Although clinical surgery its clearly written and well organized the content is rather lacking in depth and detail and the coverage of many topics is disstressingly superficial.I particularly noted:
1.the abscence of comprehensive coverage of burns and peritonitis which are major topics on exams
2.the dissapointingly concise coverage of shock which is also a major topic on exams
3.the coverage of gastrectomy-vagotomy complications are in the form of a small box!!Even non surgery oriented textbooks such as davidson spent more space to cover this topic.
Having said all that i would like to outline that clinical surgery has the foundations of a good textbook.The artwork (colour drawings,diagrams,pictures)is abundant, fascinating and extremely helpfull in the understanding of the various topics.The text is clear and easily understood .
I particularly liked the 'practical procedures' chapter where basic practicall skills are taught-very helpfull!!

This is what YOU need!

If you are a medical student doing your rounds in the various surgery departments, from general surgery to Opthalmology and Anesthesia, this is the book for you!
"Clinical Surgery" is a BEAUTIFUL book. The colors and the wonderful illustrations make reading it simple and enjoyable and remembering the details easier. The material is written in a clear manner and the content is just as deep as a medical stusdent needs it to be inorder to grasp the essentials of surgery in the time devoted for the different surgical departments.
I have looked into various books of surgery and I can confidently say that "Clinical surgery" is the book that every medical student needs! When I first set hands on this book I felt I am holding a treasure in my hands and when I looked at the beautiful illustrations I was astonished and very happy and when I started reading it I understood that I have finally found the book I REALLY NEED!
Thank you Saunders for this wonderful book! It really proves that when the book is "Saunders" it just has to be great! :)
