I doubt that any State Department White Paper could compare ...

I doubt that any State Department White Paper could compare to this book in it's depth of research, analysis, and understanding of the changing state of European politics, and society in general. It is clear that the author bemoans the emergence of the global phenomenon of "illiberal democracy" and other deviations from classic Western traditions, and gives a refreshingly honest, thoughtful, and non-partisan analysis. Readers from both sides of the political spectrum will find engaging and informative.

Detailed and heartbreaking

This book is a balanced albeit heartbreaking analysis of the worrying trends emerging in Europe and threatening to turn the half century of European ideals into a historic footnote. What we thought was irreversible - integration, liberalism, humanism - turns out to be under attack from nationalist right, fear of immigration, and influence of Russia. I only hope this book is a warning not a prophecy.
