About the Author
Gary Wagner’s love of the photographic image and craft began at the age of sixteen when he became the photographer for his high school newspaper in Kokomo, Indiana. He continued his education at Indiana University in Bloomington, eventually moving to Santa Barbara, California, to attend Brooks Institute of Photography. While at Brooks, Gary increased his artistic and theoretical knowledge of photography and the historical significance of the printed image. Earning a Master’s Degree in Photography from Brooks Institute, with the publication of his work on historical carbon printing, gave Gary a continued appreciation and passion for his artistic craft.
Gary’s professional career spans more than three decades and includes, fine art, portrait, and commercial photography. His knowledge, expertise, and enthusiasm for the photographic image enabled him to successfully teach theory and technique at the college level and seminars in Europe on the English country landscape.
Fluent with all film formats, from 35mm to 8x10, Gary has embraced the digital image and the ever-changing environment of photography in the current technological age. Exploring photography using digital imagery offers a myriad of possibilities. Refining technique with the interplay of artistic expression fascinates and challenges Gary to continue his exploration of the photographic image and his study of the land and its natural elements and beauty.
For the past 25 years Gary has made his home in the beautiful Sierra foothills of Northern California.

Exciting new book to enhance anyone's ability to produce a B&W image....

... In short order, Gary manages to share spirit inspired insight , skill and knowledge based on years of study and application ... This information is clearly shared with the reader from a tender insightful view of nature and humanity ... this book provides adequate technical information mixed coherently with precise work flows to allow the reader to decipher HOW precisely all the wonderful images contained in this book were visualized, captured and finalized... It takes the mystery out of how one may arrive at a fine art print ... I continue to enjoy this book and am applying the information daily .. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to any and all Digital Photographer who wishes to improve their skills and enhance their vision to capture an image.

Beautiful Work!

I live in Northern California and nobody does a better job of capturing the beauty around us than Gary. It is great to see Gary's work being recognized in many galleries and magazines...most recently Outdoor Photographer. His use of light and the textures he creates are gorgeous...they are truly powerful and compelling images. I've often wondered how he does it and now he explains his technique and postproduction for all of us. I hope to see more of Gary's work and hang some of my favorites on my walls at work and at home.

Great guide to fantastic B&W Landscapes!

Having known Gary for a long time, and his love for photography, it was only a matter of time until he wrote a book about his passion and life's work of photography, particularly landscape photography. The main reason I like this book so much is that he explains exactly what settings, etc...he used at the time he took each image he displays in his book, which are plentiful and varied. This allows the reader and likely photographer to attempt to replicate or at least use as guidance his techniques for producing high quality images. Pointers on the use of light and time of day are critical for anyone having attempted to shoot images outdoors and knowing the challenges. The writing is straightforward and easy to follow, however, it is written for people who have an understanding of photography and the features of camera settings. A wonderful book and I'm glad Gary has now put his legacy to paper for many to discover. Nice job Gary!
