About the Author

Jonathan Berk is the Professor of Finance in the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley and is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He currently teaches the introductory Corporate Finance course for first-year MBA students at Berkeley. Before getting his Ph.D., he worked as an Associate at Goldman Sachs, where his education in finance really began.

Professor Berk is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Finance. His research interests in finance include corporate valuation, capital structure, mutual funds, asset pricing, experimental economics, and labor economics. His work has won a number of research awards including the TIAA-CREF Paul A. Samuelson Award, the Smith Breeden Prize, Best Paper of the Year in The Review of Financial Studies, and the FAME Research Prize. His paper, “A Critique of Size Related Anomalies,” was recently selected as one of the two best papers ever published in The Review of Financial Studies. In recognition of his influence on the practice of finance he has received the Bernstein-Fabozzi/Jacobs Levy Award, the Graham and Dodd Award of Excellence, and the Roger F. Murray Prize.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Professor Berk is married, with two daughters aged 10 and 14, and is an avid skier and biker.

Peter DeMarzo is the Mizuho Financial Group Professor of Finance at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He currently teaches the "turbo” core finance course for Stanford’s first-year MBA students. In addition to his experience at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Professor DeMarzo has taught at the Haas School of Business and the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, and he was a National Fellow at the Hoover Institution.

Professor DeMarzo received the Sloan Teaching Excellence Award at Stanford in 2004 and 2006, and the Earl F. Cheit Outstanding Teaching Award at U.C. Berkeley in 1998. Professor DeMarzo has served as an Associate Editor for The Review of Financial Studies, Financial Management, and the B.E. Journals in Economic Analysis and Policy, as well as a Director of the Western Finance Association. Professor DeMarzo’s research is in the area of corporate finance, asset securitization, and contracting, as well as market structure and regulation. His recent work has examined issues of the optimal design of securities, the regulation of insider trading and broker-dealers, and the influence of information asymmetries on corporate investment. He has received numerous awards including the Western Finance Association Corporate Finance Award and the Barclays Global Investors/Michael Brennan best-paper award from The Review of Financial Studies.

Professor DeMarzo was born in Whitestone, New York and is married with three boys. He and his family enjoy hiking, biking, and skiing.

Adequate for the material presented

I ordered this book for an MBA course. The material is presented in a straight-forward manner and the chapters are explained enough, however I don't know if I would recommend this book to anyone looking to teach themselves this subject, as there are surely other textbooks out there that are more dynamic for self-starters. Having a professor teaching in conjunction with this material is a must in my opinion.

*Please Note* Make SURE when ordering this book you realize that this is NOT the COMPLETE edition of this text; hence "The Core" in the title. There are around 300 extra pages in the full text (seen here: http://www.amazon.com/Corporate-Finance-MyFinanceLab-Pearson-Student/dp/0132745097/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1328471461&sr=8-1).

If buying for class, make sure to check what chapters are covered in your course; if this text meets your needs, it is a great way to save some money as opposed to buying the full edition.

Great book. Well structured and offers great content.

Great book. I used this book for a finance course in graduate school. At that time I used a digital version. I have since went back and purchased a paper version. The book is written well and present clear and logical information and problems. I really enjoyed using this book.

I have been collecting books by E.E. Dock Smith. I enjoy reading his work. Both the Lensmen and Skylark sets of books.

Yes, Virginia, this is Lensman Canon!

First, regardless what anyone says, "Vortex Blaster" (AKA "Masters of the Vortex"), IS a Lensman novel, as much any other of the standard canon. Kinnison is a background character in the book, there are Lensmen (Telluran and Rigellian) in the story, it is set in the Lensman Universe, and it was written by Doc Smith. If these criteria do not qualify it as a Lensman book, nothing else does.

We have a parallel case in the Narnia Chronicles. The second book, "Horse and His Boy" is an odd job: it is not part of the overall continuity, does not include the main characters except as background props, and is self-contained. Yet, we still consider it part of the Narnia canon. Similarly, we need to see "Vortex Blaster" as a full and bona-fide part of the Lensman canon.

(At least, much more so than Kyle's "Second-Stage Lensman" Trilogy.)

As to the book itself, I was blown away. I am tempted to say that THIS is the book you read if you want to get converted to the series. You get a taste of Doc Smith's gusto and operatic flamboyance, coupled with his sense of the unusual as Cloud meets the odd creatures that populate Doc's universe. Additionally, I found Neal Cloud and Joan Janowick to be far more vibrant and engaging characters than Kinnison and MacDougal.

Since they are not the Arisian demigods, they are more relatable and more human. They remind me of Kierkegaard's comment, "This is the reason my soul always turns back to the Old Testament and to Shakespeare. I feel that those who speak there are at least human beings: they hate, they love, they murder their enemies and curse their descendants throughout all generations, they sin."

Since the book is self contained, Cloud's and Janowick's romance is a steady flow, as contrasted with Kinnison and MacDougal start-and-stop relationship and marriage that is drug though three Lensmen books. Their mind meld is a sci-fi classic.

Since Red Jacket, Old Earth Books, and Bison--all who have reprinted Doc Smith's works--have not reissued this book, grab the first yellowed paperback you can find, and cherish the book.

The last in the EPIC Lensmen series by Sci Fi Hall of Fame EE Doc Smith

Forty plus years ago I read the complete Lensmen series by the Sci Fi Hall of Fame EE Doc Smith. Masters of the Vortex is the last in the EPIC 5 star plus Lensmen series....one of the best sci fi series ALL time. I bought this copy to read again and add to our EE Doc Smith Collection in our family library.

Some do not think Masters of the Vortex was a Lensmen series book, but it was as there are Lensmen as minor characters in the book and the book takes place in the Lensmen "universe" using Lensmen terminology, inertia propulsion, same body armor, sidearms etc.

The main character is Neal Cloud a "nucleonicist" nuclear scientist. We see his wife and kids instantly killed and vaporized in their house by a atomic vortex with internal temperatures like the sun has. These atomic vortexes are getting more numerous and threatening several of civilizations inhabited planets.

Neal Cloud has a super fast calculating mind able to do many differential equations simultaneously in his head. With Lensmen help supplying a fast, small shielded ship and body armor against the massive potential lethal radiation from the vortexes, he starts putting out vortexes using super destructive bombs and his calculating super mind allowing him to know exactly when and where to launch his weapons.

He meets a level 3 mid level telepathic women who becomes his future soul mate and helps him develop his great mind to use his hidden great telepathic abilities. Neal Cloud becomes humankinds only level 6 telepath. Together they visit other worlds including one that has highly intelligent cat people with tails. Also other evil races that want the secret of the "blasters" inertia drive and much FTL ship abilities. We see him losing an arm in alien battle but using advanced Lensmen medical technology grows a new arm.

Lots of fighting and battle action. No boring parts. I read this 192 page book in one day and could not put it down. Some of the other Lensmen books were a little better.

I won't ruin the great ending for you explaining what these atomic vortexes really are. A very good last book in the EPIC Lensmen 5 star plus series. Masters of the Vortex 5 stars and proudly added to our Sci Fi Hall of Fame EE Doc Smith collection in our family library.

A Pioneering Work on Markets and Traders

This is the book I would recommend to anyone interested in trying his hand at the stock market.

It is not, however, exciting, by any stretch of the imagination. Nor is it a book to read over the weekend. Magee takes his time, and the reader would do well to take his time also.

This is a book to think long thoughts about. It is not at all difficult. It is, in fact, very easy. But the concepts which it addresses are fundamental, in the deepest sense of the word, to an understanding of what markets are, how they work, and what one can expect to earn from them.

It's been a few years since I posted this review, and the current edition at $50 is a bit stiff. An earlier edition is available at half the price. Scroll down.

The Best Present I Ever Bought Myself

This book was the best present I ever bought myself. Doing the work within these pages and going to CoDA meetings has made me a happier, healthier, more complete person. This program saved my life. I recommend purchasing the book "Co-Dependents Anonymous", also known as the CoDA Big Book, along with this text. It would be helpful to read the big book either along with doing the workbook, or ahead of time for further insight and clarity. Working these steps and answering the questions truly helped me to take the focus off of others and place it on myself. Thus I stopped playing the victim role and moved into a place of self love, spiritual healing and recovery that was guided by a Higher Power. The introductions in each section give the reader a good understanding of the step or tradition being discussed and the questions that follow really assist one in looking inward towards their own behaviors and defects of character. By completing these tasks, I found myself recognizing my own behaviors, sorting out those that don't serve me and replacing them with healthier habits that leave me more spiritually fulfilled and serene. I can't say that this is a project to be taken lightly. I can say with complete confidence that the more honesty and thought that goes into this undertaking means more serenity on the other side. About the Author
Richard M. Dolan is the author of the ground-breaking historical series, UFOs and the National Security State. Dolan has also published articles, spoken at conferences around the world, and appeared on numerous TV specials as an on-air expert. He lives in Rochester, New York.

Bryce Zabel has created five primetime network series, notably NBC's Emmy-winning UFO series Dark Skies, and worked on a dozen TV writing staffs. He has collaborated with producers such as Steven Spielberg and David E. Kelley. Zabel is a former CNN correspondent and was the first writer elected as chairman/CEO of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences since Rod Serling. He lives in Los Angeles, California.

Nice crystal Ball Work Lads

An interesting speculation on the question of what will happen to our civilization after 'Disclosure' happens - that is - after it is openly acknowledged by our civil authorities, our governments, our media and military leaders that there is an ongoing presence on this planet comprising extraterrestrial beings of unknown origin. To wit, what will happen after the President of the United States announces to the world (probably on a Friday evening just after the Markets have closed) that some UFOs are alien spacecraft and that the US Government has been hiding the truth for (to date) nearly 7 decades.

The book is well thought out, well researched and is in my view a noble attempt to predict the unpredictable - an event which will be the greatest 'Black Swan' in the (known) history of the world.

Richard Dolan, a historian who studied at Oxford and who was a finalist for a Rhodes scholarship, is well known to those interested in the UFO phenomenon. His two groundbreaking volumes 'UFOs and the National Security State' have exhaustively chronicled the undeniable reality of the UFO phenomenon and the 'Cosmic Watergate' cover-up that has remained in place since 1947. Bryce Zabel is a former investigative journalist and Hollywood writer and producer who, amongst other shows, wrote and produced the NBC miniseries 'Dark Skies' - a fictionalized (and highly entertaining) account of the events that transpired in the years following the Roswell crash.

If you are looking for the one book to read which chronicles and summarizes the overwhelming evidence demonstrating the reality of some UFOs as ASCs (alien spacecraft) - this is not it. That book might be either one of Mr. Dolan's earlier works noted above or perhaps Timothy Good's 'Above Top Secret' published in 1989 and therefore somewhat dated. Once Mr. Good has whetted your appetite however, you could freshen up the subject to date with Ms. Leslie Kean's 2011 book 'UFOs: Generals, Pilots, and Government Officials Go on the Record', or perhaps former Eisenhower Administration National Security Council member, Colonel Philip Corso's memoir 'The Day After Roswell'. Don't have the time or inclination to read any of these? Go to You Tube and look up `Out of the Blue' or `The Day Before Disclosure', two of the best recent serious documentaries on the subject.

Whichever route you take to personal awareness, once you have got your head around the irrefutable fact of an alien presence alongside us (or above us or underneath us or... somewhere) on our little blue planet, Dolan and Zabel's book is a pretty good read.

After a very brief review of the incontrovertible facts of the phenomenon and the cover up thereof, they go on to boldly attempt to analyse the secondary questions - who are they - what is on their agenda - are we safe? They look at the legal, political and cultural impacts that may eventuate AD (After Disclosure): the potential effects on science, art, economy, medicine, culture, anthropology, religion, our daily lives - it's a long and thorough list, even so far as to what Letterman and Leno might make of it.

Even if some of the predictions and conclusions eventually (and inevitably) turn out to be wrong there is enough meat to this bone to make for a satisfying intellectual nosh.

Personally, I would have preferred a little more specific advice about the economic impacts - where to be positioned in the markets when this news eventually breaks? I think I will probably want to be short Boeing and the rest of the aviation industry. Likewise big oil. I suspect my Sturm-Ruger and Smith and Wesson stock will do very well in the days immediately AD.

A touch disjointed towards the end perhaps in the exo-political discussions and I wish they had found a better proofreader for my First Edition - there are some annoying typos that break the thread. Nonetheless, this is well worth a read once you get your head around the big picture.

Way, way ahead of the curve!

It is rare indeed, to come across a book so brilliantly researched and written. Passion and blood are every single page. It is a must read for those who are aware and those who wish to become aware that the UFO/Contact mystery is the biggest story "never" told. Well, Richard Dolan and Bryce Zabel tell it! It is the most exhilarating UFO mystery/history lesson to date!

Dolan has become the Dean of Ufology, risking it all to give us the most comprehensive look at this fascinating phenomenon to date. This book is meticulously researched and truly historic, and it's clear that Dolan and Zabel are relentlessly in pursuit of the truth about this compelling subject. They share fascinating and expanded perspectives, on subjects that few would or could tackle. And, the beauty is that they go much further than simply documenting sightings. They prepare us brilliantly for that inevitable day when contact will be revealed, and we all will be aware that we are not alone and have never "been" alone.

Bravo to Dolan and Zabel for their herculean efforts to share their wealth of knowledge! We owe them a huge debt of gratitude, not only for their courage to share such a depth of information, but also for stepping out with such boldness.

Don't stop there, Dolan's other books are monumental, as well. "UFOs and the National Security State, Volumes I & II" are comprehensive and tremendous exposes of the Chronology of the Cover-Ups. I think Dolan has been abducted...at least by a profound fascination for this compelling field. I've read a lot of books in this field of inquiry, and, in my opinion, there is no one who comes close to Dolan's complete devotion and immersion into this magnificent murky world...he is a treasure for our generation and for those to come. Way, way ahead of the curve!

Though provoking....

A fictional account of disclosing the presence of aliens among us. When you look at history it's hard to believe there's not some validity to the claim that we have been visited by aliens. This book is very thought provoking in the matter of what could happen to our world when/if the government and secret-keepers come clean about evidence they have gathered. It gets a little long but it's actually very good and keeps it real. I enjoyed it a lot.
