A solid history.

"The Kazakhs" is a solid, academic history of the Kazakh people from an author familiar to Central Asia scholars. Olcott starts with the formation of the ethnicity and continues through the very recent past to deal with Kazakstan's "Unexpected Independence." Lots of good information regarding the critical question of Russians in Kazakhstan, and the the new country's relations with Russia. Not light reading, but a good history.

Very solid, informative and objective.

Martha Brill Olcott is certainly an expert on this country and, furthermore, she writes very well. The only setback is that it is a bit dry and might seem to be too detailed. If you you know nothing about Kazakhstan, then expect to hear so many names that you probably will feel somewhat overwhelmed. However, it deserves the five starts just because it remains the best piece of writing on this subject out there.

Thorough and comprehensive.

My review of this book will approach it from a couple of different angles - I was both assigned this book as a textbook and also read it for fun a couple of years beforehand. While I am not normally a fan of the take on major issues of policy or politics offered by most works published by the Hoover Institution Press, Olcott's work on The Kazakhs provides a wonderfully in-depth and thorough history of a people (or as thorough and in-depth as may be presented from an outsider's perspective). The reader can expect to find nuanced discussions of the role of Islam in Kazakh society as well as the effects of Soviet Communism on the Kazakh people before Kazakhstan's separation from the Soviet Union. The book ends with a discussion of the immediate post-Cold War situation in Kazakhstan, including the remnants of the USSR's space program within the former Soviet Central Asian state. That said, this book has not been updated since 1994 and is in need of a new addition addressing developments in Kazakhstan since. Over all, however, this is a comprehensive and highly recommended study for anyone with an interest in Kazakhstan or the peoples of the former Soviet Union.

I've heard a lot about digital currencies such as Bitcoin, Litecoin etc. and have heard of many individuals making big $$$ mining and trading Bitcoins. After read a few useless books I finally stumbled upon this book.

For people preparing for the new Core Exam, this book is worth its weight in gold. This was the only thing I read regarding MRI prior to the Pilot exam (including not reading the RSNA Modules) and it covered nearly every question on the test! I did great on the physics mostly because of this book. It does take some time to get through the whole book, but you won't regret it! This book will have a HUGE impact on your score. I will be reading it cover-to-cover again before the real exam. It is also very well written and much easier to understand than some other MRI books. It is also very clinically applicable rather than heavy on formulas and numbers and that garbage. I think you will find it actually makes sense!

I received an initial copy of this book which was unreadable. The quality of the images, like another reviewer mentioned, was atrocious. Some images were completely black. Other images looked as though they were from the end of a printer cartridge. The paper was single ply toilet paper thin. I returned the initial copy, hoping this was a fluke. The second copy had the exact same problem, except worse.

Amazon was great about the returns. However, either the publisher is dropping the ball on printing a quality book, or Amazon was sold a rogue batch of books from an unreliable distributor. Either way, if you are not buying an old copy, you run the risk of a similar scenario.

This is a fine review of clinical MRI and MRI physics

This is a fine review of clinical MRI and MRI physics, and was recommended by a few people. It is well written and the case examples are quite good. It is way too detailed for a board review text, so I don't recommend it for cramming. My copy didn't suffer the same printing quality issues that others complain about, the font is very small and paper is quite thin. This is one of those books that would be better in electronic format. Anyhow, I'll be keeping it in my reference library.

A super face exercise book

This book has diagrams of the facial muscles, showing you exactly what you are working on and it has Marjorie Craig demonstrating the exercises themselves. There is almost no way you can go wrong - the main difficulty is doing them slowly, so they have the most effect.
It all seems deceptively simple - but the exercises are good and they do work.
I have had this book for years. I have also read many other facial exercise books over the years and I have never found a more thorough one, or a more effective one.

I Love it!

My husband bought "Miss Craig's Face Saving Exercises" book for me as birthday gift for my 28th birthday, 44 years ago. I am now 72 years old. I have tried to do these exercises faithfully through the years. These exercises truly have saved my face. A nurse who works for a plastic surgeon, whom I recently met, thought I had had Botox treatments, which I never have had. She said she has never seen a women of my age with the high cheekbones, toned skin and said I looked like I was in my 50's.
I generally have done my facial exercises while I was driving the children, then grandchildren to their activities and now I still do them as I am driving in the car, it has always worked for me in this way. I really thank God for Marjorie Craig's instructional teaching, what foresight she had! And I thank God my husband bought me this birthday gift that I treasure!
I also have "Miss Craig's 21-Day Shape-Up Program" book. I have through the years incorporated her stretches, use of ankle weights and hand weights into my daily exercise program it really did create a "dancer's body"!

About the Author
Philip Butterworth is Reader in Medieval Theatre at the School of Performance and Cultural Industries, University of Leeds. He is the author of Theatre of Fire: Special Effects in Early English and Scottish Theatre, and has published widely in journals on the subject of Medieval Theatre, including essays in 'Medieval English Theatre'. He is currently working, with Joslin McKinney, on The Cambridge Introduction to Scenography, to be published in 2006.

An important addition to conjuring and stage literature

Coming, as it does, from an academic author and the Cambride University Press, there's no surprise in the scholarly, and often pedantic, character of the prose found in this publication. It draws heavily from classical conjuring-related texts such as Scott's DISCOUERIE OF WITCHCRAFT, and to a lesser degree, Ady's A CANDLE IN THE DARK. The extended quotations in the text are of a font size that put a strain my aging eyes as well, but they'll likely prove no problem for most readers.

Author Butterworth excels in bringing to light numerous passages from contemporary medieval and renaissance financial documents, listing various jugglers (conjurers), expressing their play dates, the contents of their programs and what they were paid. His listing of connections to the fraudulent use of trickery by the church, among other institutions and individuals, is also quite interesting, as are the conjuring-related "feats of activity." The theatrical "special effects" noted are very interesting as well. As noted, a fair amount of the content is found in other works, including the profiles of several personalities the author sketches. Butterworth credits Edwin Dawes (who wrote the Foreword), perhaps the world's leading current exponent of magic history, for his assistance. The book's price is more in line with what one would expect to pay for a college text than for a smallish hardbound tome for the general reader. As a student of magic history, though, I very much enjoyed it and believe those with similar interests will as well.
