About the Author
Deviant Ollam's first and strongest love has always been teaching. A graduate of the New Jersey Institute of Technology's Science, Technology, and Society program, he is always fascinated by the interplay that connects human values and social trends to developments in the technical world. While earning his BS degree at NJIT, Deviant also completed the History degree program federated between that institution and Rutgers University. While paying the bills as a security auditor and penetration testing consultant with The CORE Group, Deviant is also a member of the Board of Directors of the U.S. division of TOOOL, The Open Organisation Of Lockpickers. Every year at DEFCON and ShmooCon, Deviant runs the Lockpick Village, and he has conducted physical security training sessions at Black Hat, DeepSec, ToorCon, HackCon, ShakaCon, HackInTheBox, CanSecWest, ekoparty, and the United States Military Academy at West Point. His favorite Amendments to the U.S. Constitution are, in no particular order, the 1st, 2nd, 9th, and 10th.

Great for basic understanding of locks.

First, this book is amazingly well written. It could be used as a shining example of how to structure a technical book.
Second, it shows you how crummy the security of some locks are, points out good brands, and gives you an idea of how much a good lock costs, and why. Worth my while to read to help me understand how secure my locks are.
Does not give you the ability to pick good locks, which is a good thing to me.

Contradictory at times

Ar first I thought this book was mainly aimed at novice lockpickers. The author made some recommendations that seemed like they were aimed at helping the user spend money wisely. Then came the section on tubular lock picking and it went off the rails. The first style of lockpicks were very basic and quite affordable as well as being effective. Then the author went on to endorse a lock-picking tool that cost well over $400 and that required different "tips" at $50 each. This tool was HUGE and awkward to use unless you were in a lock shop or at home on a workbench. Totally impractical for field use. The name of the tool is the "Peterson Pro-1 Tubular Lockpick" by Peterson Manufacturing. They have a website and you can view the lockpick and it's accessories there.
What the author totally ignored was the Deluxe ACE Tubular Lockpick. This item is sold in many stores and you can see it being used in the excellent video "Lock Picking for the New Millenium". It cost much less at around $270 and no additional parts are necessary. It's easier to use and is much more compact. Perfect for both the novice and the pro.
There were other recommendations that I have found to be not that good, especially when it came to individual picks. The book is easy enough to read, but I would be careful about taking it's recommendations. Makes me wonder if the author is getting some kind of kickback from certain lockpick tool makers.

Good basic lock primer

I bought this book to get a basic understanding of locks and it was satisfactory for that purpose.
I am not especially interested in picking locks but understanding the process is very valuable to understand what to avoid to increase security. I can now recognize good padlocks and poor padlocks and can understand how pin tumbler locks are made pick resistant.
The discussion of wafer locks was not as good - the author seemed to assume that they were so inferior that they deserved very little space. As a result, my understanding of wafer locks is inferior to my understanding of pin tumbler locks.
