Title: Communication Among Social Bees
Author: Martin Lindauer.
I found Lindauer‘s book very fascinated because the author details show how social bees communicate. Methods of communication include tail wagging dance, using the sun as a reference point for indicating direction, and by using their sensory. Humans being communicate by speech, written language, sign language, body language, and many other cultural and technological inventions. Insects also have many ways to communicate but, unlike humans, their "language" is almost entirely innate. Each individual is born with a distinctive "vocabulary" that is shared only with other members of its own species. Lindauer is trained as a scientist and studies bees. Thus his observations are backed up by experiments in the laboratory and in the field. Honestly speaking I really did not know which book to pick to flourish my knowledge about insects, but I think now I finally got some knowledge about insects after reading this book.
The importance of reading a book is if the reader can get something out of it. One of the parts of this book which strikes me the most is the way these bees communicate from each other when it comes to food. These bees use the dance of a tail, and humming to express where to find food. After looking for food, the worker bee returns to the hive by running excitedly and looks for other bees to communicate with them. This turns towards a tail wagging dance. The sound of humming makes the communication between the bees very important. The deepest and the longest sound the humming becomes, the farthest the food location is. I never imagine an insect could be able to dance until I read this book. This is another reason why I believe this book is very interested to read because it will get you steps by steps until the reader has fully understood the bees’ communication.
The bees don’t only communicate by dancing but also by their sensory. The senses of smell and taste use by the dancer when giving information about the type of food or flowers she visited is a very well- known method of communication among the bees. Excellent sensory performance is required when the bee reveals the location and the distance of a food source to other bees in the hive. Another fascinating thing on the communication among these bees is the way of capability of calculating the distance from the rhythmic movements that they have seeming in the dark hive. Then this information helps them for orientation on their fights to the food source. This is like how humans being communicate. If you eat food and enjoy the taste and smell, you will recommend that type of food to friends and family. This is very amazing how insects act as humans being.
These insects also communicate by using the sun as reference point for indicating direction. As we know, the sun is not stables. It moves from different places such as behind clouds, mountains. Also the presence of the sun is not all time, because sometimes the sun disappears at the night. However, with this change of the sun, the bees are capable of acting oriented dances under these difficult conditions. This is only few good part of this book. As I stated earlier, I never knew anything about insects. However, I believe this book helps me to better understand how bees communicate among them. Therefore, I recommend people to read this book because it will help people to understand how insects especially bees live and communicate between them.

About the Author

Jeremy M. Wolfe is Professor of Ophthalmology & Radiology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Wolfe was trained as a vision researcher/experimental psychologist and remains one today. His early work includes papers on binocular vision, adaptation, and accommodation. The bulk of his recent work has dealt with visual search and visual attention in the lab and in real world settings such as airport security and cancer screening. He taught Introductory Psychology for over twenty-five years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he won the Baker Memorial Prize for undergraduate teaching in 1989. He directs the Visual Attention Lab and the Center for Advanced Medical Imaging of Brigham & Women's Hospital.

Keith R. Kluender is Professor and Head of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and Professor of Psychological Sciences at Purdue University. His research encompasses: how people hear complex sounds such as speech; how experience shapes the way we hear; how what we hear guides our actions and communication; clinical problems of hearing impairment or language delay; and practical concerns about computer speech recognition and hearing aid design. Dr. Kluender is deeply committed to teaching, and has taught a wide array of courses: philosophical, psychological, and physiological.

Dennis M. Levi has taught at the University of California, Berkeley since 2001. He is Professor in the School of Optometry and Professor at the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute. In the lab, Dr. Levi and colleagues use psychophysics, computational modeling, and brain imaging (fMRI) to study the neural mechanisms of normal pattern vision in humans, and to learn how they are degraded by abnormal visual experience (amblyopia).

Linda M. Bartoshuk is Bushnell Professor, Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at the University of Florida. Her research on taste has opened up broad new avenues for further study, establishing the impact of both genetic and pathological variation in taste on food preferences, diet, and health. She discovered that taste normally inhibits other oral sensations such that damage to taste leads to unexpected consequences like weight gain and intensified oral pain. Most recently, working with colleagues in Horticulture, her group found that a considerable amount of the sweetness in fruit is actually produced by interactions between taste and olfaction in the brain. This may lead to a new way to reduce sugar in foods and beverages.

Rachel S. Herz is Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University and Part-time Faculty in the Psychology Department at Boston College. Her research focuses on a number of facets of olfactory cognition and perception and on emotion, memory, and motivated behavior. Using an experimental approach grounded in evolutionary theory and incorporating both cognitive-behavioral and neuropsychological techniques, Dr. Herz aims to understand how biological mechanisms and cognitive processes interact to influence perception, cognition, and behavior.

Roberta L. Klatzky is the Charles J. Queenan Jr. Professor of Psychology at Carnegie Mellon University, where she also holds faculty appointments in the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition and the Human-Computer Interaction Institute. She has done extensive research on haptic and visual object recognition, space perception and spatial thinking, and motor performance. Her work has application to haptic interfaces, navigation aids for the blind, image-guided surgery, teleoperation, and virtual environments.

Susan J. Lederman is Professor Emerita of Psychology at Queen's University, with cross-appointments in the Centre for Neuroscience and in the School of Computing. Her research interests span both perception and cognition, with particular emphases on psychophysics, haptic perception and recognition of objects and their underlying neural processes and representations, multisensory perception, and sensory-guided motor control. She has applied the results of her research to a number of real-world problems, including the design of haptic and multisensory interfaces for virtual environments and teleoperation.

Daniel M. Merfeld is a Professor of Otology and Laryngology at the Harvard Medical School with appointments at the Harvard-MIT Health, Science, and Technology program and the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Science. He is also the Director of the Jenks Vestibular Physiology Laboratory at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Much of his research career has been spent studying how the brain combines information from multiple sources, with a specific focus on how the brain processes ambiguous sensory information from the vestibular system in the presence of noise. Translational work includes research developing new methods to help diagnose patients experiencing vestibular symptoms and research developing vestibular implants for patients who have severe problems with their vestibular labyrinth.

Provides some cool info on Perception processes

I rented this book for a psychology course I took in college. The book was really easy to understand and the chapters were quick to get through. I feel like it repeats a lot of information from other introductory psych courses and textbooks. However, it does give a little more information on the biology and processes of perception. If you need to get this text for a course, I would suggest renting or buying an older edition. It doesn't seem like they add too much to the different editions. Any new information would likely be covered in class. The text is a little big, but it's not heavy at all. It's real easy to take it to class.

Brett Green is the editor of HyperScale (www.hyperscale.com), an online model magazine established in 1998, and a highly respected aviation modeller. He has published two books on the colours and markings of Luftwaffe aircraft: 'Augsburg's Last Eagles', on the late-war Messerschmitt Bf 109, and 'Stormbird Colors' on the Me 262. P-40 modelling help

A good cross section of projects. The finishing (specifically painting) techniques could be expanded, or even a separate chapter on painting and weathering techniques added to the book. I found the book invaluable to doing a quality build of a 1/48 P-40.

A good reference book for modelers of WW-II aircraft

I'm currently in the process of building two models representing the American Volunteer Group (AVG) who flew an early model of the P-40 against the Japanese Army Air Force at the start of WW-II. This book provided me with valuable information about building an accurate model of the aircraft flown by David Lee "Tex" Hill, one of the aces of the group (and one of my personal heroes.

Most kits of the P-40B are out-of-scale in one part or another, and this book helped me to model the one I'm working on; modifications of several contours, mainly the horizontal stabilizer, were required. In addition, paint colors can be a problem as these early aircraft were to be sent to Great Britain before being co-opted by the AVG for Flying Tiger use.

About the Author
C. S. Jog is Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and worked as a postdoctoral assistant at the Technical University of Denmark for a year. He has more than twenty years of teaching and research experience and has published nearly forty papers in national and international journals. He teaches courses on elasticity, strength of materials, continuum mechanics and numerical analysis at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. His areas of interest are finite element methods, solid mechanics and structural optimisation.

This is a major contribution to the Literature in Continuum Mechanics. The amount of material on Tensors is more comprehensive than what you have in books dedicated to that subject alone: over two hundred pages in all! I agree with a previous commenter that the material is too scanty on the important subject of kinematics. The material on fourth-order tensors is so current that references to published articles on the subject are not more illuminating! A tremendous effort!

"Edison as I Know Him" by Henry Ford is a highly readable account of Ford's admiration of Edison as well as a valuable insight into Edison's character as a man and inventor, and his monumental influence on mankind. While it is obvious that Ford is a bias reporter his thoughts and reporting are nonetheless accurate and inspiring. As it was Edison (his childhood idol) probably more than anyone else who encouraged Ford [1896] in pursuing his development of the internal combustion engine and automobile. Ford became lifelong friends with Edison after becoming reacquainted with him in 1912 (well after Ford's successful introduction of the Model T in 1908), and from 1914 and 1924 they took annual Model T tours across the Eastern part of the United States with naturalist John Burroughs and Henry Firestone et al. This story is a treat for any student of history as well as an uplifting experience for everyone else.
